Here are 2 regular guys from Western Australia; Joshua Butterworth and Jethro Bonnichta, who happened to land a tiger shark and hammerhead near Carnarvon. Since December, the two have caught up to 30 sharks without the intention of hooking the beasts of the deep, they have told Western Australian press.

The estimated 2-300kg sharks were reportedly caught by the game fishermen with standing harnesses and took hours to reel in. The mates have stressed that the health of the sharks was their priority, making sure they had water to their gills whilst taking their celebrity photos. The pair also highlighted that they never kill the creatures and took the upmost care to return them to the ocean.

A 10-hour drive north of Perth, Carnarvon is close to the popular surf spot Gnarloo where the last shark attack was in September 2014 involving a spearfisherman. "You generally feel safe in the waters in the north-west because there has never been a fatal attack and Great Whites don't travel up that far, but they are out there." Says Coastalwatch's Dan Wyer.

Western Australia has set up the leading shark awareness website to keep coastal users safe. Check out the SharkSmart website and App for the most up to date shark information and alerts. The site is run by the State Government, the Department of Fisheries, Surf Life Saving WA and the water police as a collaborative public service.
