The One Reason You Can't Help But Be Stoked For John Florence

SURFING WORLD MAGAZINE | #11 / 50 Most Intriguing People In Surfing Today

He's just won the Oi Rio Pro and Noa Deane reckons he's the best surfer in the world but why is it that we just can't get enough of JJF?

NOA DEANE SPEAKS TO JOHN JOHN FLORENCE

John John is just the best surfer in the world. That’s the reason we love him. Also, he’s a people person. Everyone likes him. I’ve surfed with him a couple of times, and he’s a super nice guy, really chilled in the water. There’s no hassling from him. He just gets the waves because everyone’s like; “F*** he’s probably gonna do the best f****n thing ever done on it, so he may as well go it.”

Smashing the comps is cool, but I definitely wanna see more video sections from him. He’s should do the contests too, but you can’t tone down that kind of surfing just to make heats. He should just say f*** it and make more crazy videos. Maybe he would be way more psyched if he just landed something new every week that no one’s ever done? He surfs a lot, and he’d probably be doing even more crazy shit than he already does if he was a full on free surfer.

Maybe he can do both though? I mean, Julian and Jordy still free surf like madmen, and same goes for John John. They do the comps but still push it in free surfs. I guess what I mean is free surfers are lucky because they have time to find their thing, and you’re not trying to be fucking cool, because you like some music or because you wanna get a fucking dumb haircut or something, but you just have more time to figure yourself out. The guys on tour are that busy, stack free surfing on top of heats and all you can fit in is sleeping. It’s such a gnarly schedule, and you can’t hurt yourself in a free surf if you wanna win the next comp, right? I think that’s why those guys don’t really show their personality too much outside the tour. But John John has one. I think there’s a lot more to him than meets the eye.

I don’t know much about the dude but he’s one of my favourite surfers. Kinda weird, but kinda sick. Maybe that’s his thing, so people don’t get a bee in their bonnet about personality or whatever and just see that he’s the sickest surfer ever. You’d have to be a fucking idiot not to see that. Like seriously, so f****g dumb. For a World Title, he’d have to cut down a lot of his free surfing game, to generate a bit more contest hunger. It just seems all the guys who are fit, and surf like they’ve been trained all their lives are the ones who are winning. And they don’t even surf that much apart from their heats. They wouldn’t do an eight-hour session around the comp. You cant, it’s too tiring.

So maybe John John knows he can win one? I dunno, but if you reckon you can win one, you should go for it! I know Kolohe would love to win a World Title too. He’s the same kind of child prodigy. I’m down with it for sure, because whoever the f**k rips the hardest should win right now!
