COASTALWATCH | Swell Diary

Wednesday 25 May 2016, it was a good day in Sydney.

There was a community of surfers who woke up to the roar and deep-bass-like pounding of an autumn groundswell yesterday. Some empowered themselves to dust off their guns and utilise the good'ole Aussie 'sickie' option to take advantage of a clean, crisp & tasty south swell that lit up points, slabs and bomboras.

A fresh round of south swell arrived at a solid 3 to 4ft across the region on Tuesday 24, with light offshore winds. It was preceded by a much stronger overnight rise in mid-period groundswell pushing up above forecast expectations at 5 to 6ft plus, across south facing breaks on Wednesday morning. As discussed in Monday's Sydney forecast, this episode followed the development of an intense low-pressure system southeast of Tasmania on Monday afternoon.

Darcy Crump headed to Germans, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Strapped up with a tube-suit floatation vest and his 9'2 Aido Wheeler gun, he took himself out for a killer day and what he described as a 'good decision to ditch school for.'

It wasn't the Hurley team rider's first time out at the outter reef and he is certainly getting to know his way around the triple-over-head swells especially after his recent trip to Hawaii, but unlike Slater's wave pool anything can happen once you hit water.

Crump recounted, "I jumped in up north and paddled out and around the first bombie. I made my way around the back for back bombie, then finally I found myself paddling through the channel looking into solid 12ft waves at Germans!"

"It was hard to tell how big it was out there because every wave was really different, but there was definitely waves pushing 15ft at times." He said, also describing it as a lot more 'raw' than the swells in Hawaii with the variance in the wave shapes and sizes.

Coastalwatch surf reporter Ben Horvath updated his report around midday with confirming the size, "Wow! Swell kicked and looked to have peaked in the 10ft plus range mid-morning. Only The points and select southern reefs are looking surfable for the experienced crew! Some guys towing exposed reefs - could be anywhere in the 12ft plus range easy. Beaches awash."
