THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was June 24, 2016

1. Shippies Is Terrifying And Amazing And Terrifying

What did you do last Thursday? Went to work? Ate a chicken sandwich? Maybe caught up on some of your favourite shows before getting an early night for Friday? That's nice. A nice, normal Thursday. Different story down at Australian surfing's scariest monster, Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania. No chicken sandwiches and episodes of The Big Bang Theory for Danny Griffiths, Russell Bierke, Rudi Schwartz, James McKean and Alex Zawadski as they scored the biggest of what's been an unbelievable month of swell for Australia. Can you believe Danny Griffith's wipe-out second wave in, AND at the 0.55 mark AND at the 1.27 mark, as well! How are people like him still alive, and still surfing?

2. Conner Coffin Isn't A Bad Choice As Your Second Favourite Surfer

Because your favourite surfer is obviously Mick/Dane/Ando/Curren/Steph/John John... obviously. So Conner can be your second fave, yeah? This is a great clip, but honestly, if it was just a loop of that one turn at 0.56 for five minutes, it'd still leave a lot of his fans for his classic lines and timeless power on rail frothing at the mouth. And guess what? The next big event is at Jeffrey's Bay. He might go a little bit alright in his first major showing at the famed right point.

3. Let's (re)Meet Aussie 16 Year Old Kael Walsh

How do you like your Aussie grommets to surf? With lofty full rotation aerials or packing pumping tubes? Well, to quote the little girl in that old Ol Del Paso ad, "Why don't we have both?" Kael Walsh joins Taj and Jay Davies and Creed McTaggart and Jack Robinson as a proponent of classic West Aus surfing.

4. And Jamie Krups, You Know Jamie Krups

Sydney's Jamie Krups scoops us nine minutes of cream from his bank of surf footage over the last few months on the Aussie East Coast. Sick goofy-footed style to a Bad Brains live recording right here.

5. Mason Ho | Wedge City and Hawaiian Hurricanes

Mason Ho's License To Chill series keeps on rolling, this episode focussing on storms around Hawaii that make for some novelty waves. Mason Ho + novelty wedges = A Really Good Time

6. Ain't That Swell Is Back With A Fiji Wrap

Yes, shredheads, waxheads, kooks and barneys... Jed Smith and Vaughan Blakey and the world's best surfing podcast are back with a 90 minute episode after a two month hiatus. The smartest and simultaneously most stupid (in a funny way) analysis of professional surfing lives right in this audio.

Language warning!

7. Gaz and Duncs Do Surfing

Garrett Parkes and Duncan McNicol, a coupl'a north coast good ol' boys that are really skilled at reminding us just how fun surfing is deliver in this edit for Afends. And if a surf clip makes surfing look fun, well then it's done it's job. P.S. RAD TUBE STANCE ALERT at 2.15

8. John John, Behind The Scenes On The Movie of The Decade (Maybe)

Seppo active-lifestyle mag Outside Magazine put John John Florence on their cover recently and pulled together this nice behind the scenes insight into View From A Blue Moon, which, if you've forgotten, some people are calling the greatest surf film of all time. It's not, it's really good, but it's not. Pulse 2 is still no.1.

9. Chippa Wilson and The Nixon Surf Challenge In Ireland

In celebration of Ireland making the Euro Cup final 16, let’s kick into this terribly lovely Nixon Surf Challenge in Ireland clip, starring Chippa Wilson in absolutely ripping form. God, he’s good. The first half of the edit is a nice intro of perspective from rad legend and Greens candiate, Fergal Smith.

10. Hector Santamaria and Rad Looking Boards

Art on surfboards can be pretty naff, but clips of Hector Santamaria never disappoint so we're in god hands here. This clip has Hector surfing the coast of South Aus on a quiver of amazing looking boards that Eye Symmetry made in collaboration with surreal New York artist Dimitri Drjuchin. With Dan Deacon and Godspeed You Black Emperor on the soundtrack, very flowy surfing, quality waves, and a tight edit, this is a top quality, A-grade surf clip right here. Props to everyone involved.

Bonus... LOOK OUT OTTO!

Thiroul's a dangerous place to go surfing, you gotta watch out for flying Harry Steeles all the time. Don't matter if you're Kai Otton coming out a neat little pit, Harry Steele is going to randomly appear falling out of the sky... right next to you. Amazing.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
