It has been reported that the second shark attack in two weeks has occurred at Sharpes Beach north of Ballina. The 25-year-old man was surfing when he suffered a shark bite to his lower leg before presenting himself hospital just before midday. The police and the DPI are currently examining the man's board to determine specific information about the animal.

The man told police on arrival at Ballina hospital that he had been surfing with friends for two hours before feeling a bump under his board and falling into the water.

Surf Life Saving NSW has issued a closure of all beaches for the entire Ballina Shire including Lennox Head.
