It has been reported that a man has suffered a shark attack at Broken Head, just south of Byron Bay at approximately 6.30 morning. The man was surfing when he was attacked and suffered lacerations to his left leg. He was seen to have large teeth puncture wounds on his leg and board.

This incident is the 17th attack in NSW since September 2015 and the fourth in a month in the Ballina-Byron area alone. NSW Premier Mike Baird announced the installation of shark meshing nets for the area immediately after the last attack in Ballina.

*Update 5pm 24/10/2016: It has been reported that free surfer Asher Pacey was bumped by a Great White Shark at 1.30pm at Lennox Head and at 3.30pm a large shark chased a surfer out of the water at Flat Rock, north of Ballina.

The shark meshing nets are causing great divide in the area with a number of residents concerned about the death through by-catch and the threat to marine life. Local residents held a rally on Ballina Beach on Sunday to voice their concerns about the suspected threats. Nick Carroll has thoroughly investigated the numbers and the history of the nets. READ HIS STORY HERE.

The NSW State Government has also announced today the update to shark net legislation. Read it all here:
