Video Overview: Delaying The Turn

DO YOU:

  • Find you tend to gain and lose speed in an erratic way?
  • Regularly, find yourself out on the shoulder struggling to get back to the whitewater, losing speed and getting knocked off?
  • Regularly find yourself doing a top turn then suddenly becoming out of sync with the wave?

If so, this is classic anxiety based surfing. Many surfers rush turns out of anxiety of what's going to happen on a wave. Somewhere in throughout your surfing journey, anxiety has built up and is now forcing you to rush movements and disconnect from the wave. You're not sure why it's happening but you do find yourself battling it.

The biggest gap between a competent surfer and a really good surfer is the ability to time the turn with the wave not beyond it, so the turn is not just a turn but something that fits into the wave that provides you with constant speed.

Here are three tips to get you back in total sync with the wave;

TIPS:

  1. WATCH THE WAVE
    Very straight forward. Draw on the relaxed and alert state techniques we've already reviewed in previous episodes. Watch the wave while you're paddling into it, have a really good look at it and work out where you want that wave to carry you and where you want the turn to take you and not focus on the actual turn.

  2. LOOK WHERE YOU'RE GOING
    Every turn you do, look where you're going. If you just look, it keeps you focused on the wave and away from what you're doing. You want to put your eyes along the line of the turns and moves you're doing. Always be looking a little bit ahead of your movement and where you are.

  3. YOU DON'T NEED TO TURN
    Turns aren't the bees-neez of surfing. Really good surfing happens between turns. Think about it. If you want to delay a turn to get back to the steeper part of the wave where the speed comes from, then don't get hung up on turning, sometimes it means just stopping, slowing down and finding the flow of where you want to be.
