VIDEO OVERVIEW: SIX KILLER DRILLS

Surfing is about play and play is not to be mocked. It's how we learn and get better at surfing, get more in tune with the wave and get a better understanding of what's going on under your feet.

  1. FINS FIRST 
    Can be hard but also funny. Go out on a shitty closeout day and catch a bunch of waves fins-first. Stand up the right way round but going backward. Let the fins catch and pull your board around — or not! Best done with friends who are prepared to gamble on the results. Leads to…
     
  2. SWITCHFOOT 
    Oh yeah. This is one for the Dad/hipster longboard. I know a few people who have become super good ambidextrous surfers as a result of being obsessed after trying to switch. You learn so much about every aspect, stance, weight, timing, takeoffs, setting rails, it’s mental. Even if it pisses you off it’ll be worth trying.
     
  3. CATCH-UP SWIM DRILL
    This helps with the extended paddle-swim stroke. The idea is not to begin the stroke until one hand is “caught up” with the other out in front. Leave the right hand extended out, bring the left forward to match it, pull the right-hand stroke, return the right hand to match the extended left, pull the left. Etc. Slows and smooths the stroke and gives you a great sense of how much pressure you’re putting on the water in the stroke.
     
  4. ROCK RUNNING
    Gyms are great and all I guess. The world itself is better. If you want to work on freedom of movement, go run around the rocks of your nearest headland. Rock to rock movement at any pace faster than walking really wakes up the mind and body and forces you into the moment; if you’re not in the moment, you’ll pay. Some people are way quicker than others at this on the first try, which tells you it’s worth doing.
     
  5. BLINDFOLD
    OK not actually blindfold. Though I have done this with people using goggles painted black. Catch a wave, stand up, shut your eyes, deal with it. How much of your water movement sense is reliant purely on vision? How much is stored away somewhere else and just waiting to come out?
     
  6. NO-PADDLE TAKEOFF
    Literally, every time you can. Paddle to put yourself in a spot, then take off with or under the lip. You’ve GOTTA relax in order to pull this on a regular basis.
