The open beaches and reefs on the Victorian Surf Coast lit up at sunrise this morning to the delight of locals.

It’s fair to say Victoria’s swell window is about as active as you’re likely to see it this week. The entire Southern Ocean below the mainland is now occupied by a gigantic, complex extratropical low that’s supporting a vast area of WSW gales; measuring spanning some 2,500 nautical miles of open ocean.

There was a strong rise in surf-heights state-wide on Tuesday which began to culminate in heavy surf across all coasts from dawn this morning and will continue into Friday. This episode is comprised of two distinct, overlapping swell pulses; the first arriving from a more WSW direction on Wednesday, which will be preceded by the onset of a stronger SW groundswell on Thursday.
