COASTALWATCH | SWELL DIARY

WEDNESDAY 29 - FRIDAY 31 MARCH 2017
View the Coastalwatch Wave Tracker for this weekend's conditions

North, south, east and west, there was swell everywhere you looked over the last three days. Great timing for the start of the 2017 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in WA, the wash up after torrential 500mL of rain from ex-TC Debbie in Queensland and Northern NSW and a great big Southern Ocean system moving across through South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania headed straight for New Zealand. Here's how it looked and where it's all headed this weekend.

*Stay tuned to live conditions on the COASTALWATCH SURF CAMERAS & FORECASTS.

QLD: The re-development of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie generates an extended run of mid to large surf; starting out SSE in direction over the weekend before kicking out of the SE early to mid next week. Strong S winds see best conditions along the points and inside the bays throughout the outlook period. READ FULL ANALYSIS

VIC: A renewed building trend in SW groundswell sets in statewide on Saturday, pushing set waves back up into the 8 to 10ft range across exposed stretches during the day. Expect a corresponding push towards 6 to 8ft across the Surf Coast, with early favourable WNW winds turning SW late morning. SW groundswell hangs in at still large to heavy levels early on Sunday before backing off into the afternoon. A steady decline in SW swell follows early next week. READ FULL ANALYSIS

NSW: Short range SSE swell eases to 2 to 4ft across the region on Saturday morning ahead of a further drop in size during the afternoon. A renewed rise in S windswell to 3 to 4ft plus on Sunday is accompanied by strong southerly winds. Expect smaller SSE swell in the 2 to 3ft range by Monday morning, with scope for a renewed building trend in SE swell Tuesday/ Wednesday under onshore winds. READ FULL ANALYSIS

SA: Excellent conditions prevail from Friday to Sunday as light, mostly offshore winds greet small to mid-sized SW swell ranging from 2 to 4ft across the South Coast. A much larger, stormier round of SW sets in statewide early to mid next week. SEE FULL ANALYSIS

WA: Large scale SSW swell will decrease Thursday under clean offshore wind conditions. Easing surf with steady offshore winds continues Friday and an underlying SSW swell offering a slight reinforcement of rising medium scale sets on S standouts into Saturday. Fading surf with clean conditions due early next week. SEE FULL ANALYSIS
