Fitzgibbons & Florence Win In The West

Defending World Champion John John Florence and Australian golden girl Sally Fitzgibbons have claimed their first victories for 2017 in Margaret River today.
For Fitzgibbons, this comes as her tenth World Championship Tour victory and perhaps a signal to the world that she's back and more determined than ever to go for the title. In the three to five feet conditions at Surfers Point, Wright, Gilmore, Erickson & Fitzgibbons kept the scores tight and the rivalry tighter until it came down to Wright and Fitzgibbons to finish it off at 14.9 - 12.53.
“I’m so over the moon to be holding this trophy,” Fitzgibbons said. “When I heard my name being called out as the champion, I really felt a sense of belonging and calm. It’s been an amazing couple of weeks here in the West and to finish it off with a win is the best feeling. I love coming to Margaret River. I feel like it’s a place that I am super comfortable and familiar with, so it’s a special event win for me.”
“The town of Gerroa is so small and it was well represented today in the final with Tyler and myself, which is really cool,” continued Fitzgibbons. “Holding equal first on the rankings is a special feeling for me. It’s a long year, so I just need to keep focused and keep to my goals and hopefully hold on to the top spot.”
Jack Freestone's dominance right through the event was refreshing. It would have been great to see a Freestone/Florence final despite them being on the same side of the draw. John met Freestone in the semis and slammed two nines on the scoreboard. It seemed inevitable that John would win the event after his performance making 15 feet of Indian Ocean majesty last week look like a fun day out in three-foot Dbah.
John took the win after defeating Kohlohe Andino with a similar near perfect score card putting him back into his favourite colour jersey going into Bells.
