RED BULL CAPE FEAR 2017 | FORECAST PARTNER

Today signifies the start of the 2017 Red Bull Cape Fear waiting period. The unique, invitation-only big wave surf event, that last year was held in the heaviest waves ever surfed is back with a 20-surfer format.

Contest Director, Mark Mathews said “Last year’s event was beyond my wildest imagination and I can hardly wait to see what Mother Nature throws up at Cape Solander this year. Having the 16 surfers from 2016 event and the additional four internationals will make for an unbelievable show.”

THE CONDITIONS:

If the conditions swing in just right between May 1 and 31 August, surfers will be taking on 8-12 feet monster slab waves at Cape Solander in Sydney. Conditions we're looking for to see perfect Cape Fear are 3 to 4m ESE groundswell with light W to SW winds. Chief surf forecaster Ben Macartney says that in the leadup to calling the event on there are a number of factors, “I'm analysing mean sea levels and pressure for any major storms forming over the Tasman Sea or Southern Ocean. Then I’m assessing potential surf-heights, wave period, wave direction and arrival times - as well as local winds ideal for running Red Bull Cape Fear.” Stay up to date with Ben's fortnightly event forecast right here

THE FORMAT:

The event organisers aim to run Red Bull Cape Fear as a single day event using a unique overlapping heat formula where four surfers compete across five, forty minute heats. This can vary between paddle and tow-in takeoffs for the surfers.

The single highest paddle and single highest tow wave will count for each surfer's total heat score. The winner of each heat progresses straight to the final. The second placed surfer moves to the repechage round where they have another chance to surf for a place in the final.

The highest placed surfer at the end of the final will be crowned the 2017 champion.

THE 20 INVITED SURFERS:

Andrew Mooney, Blake Thornton, Billy Kemper (2017 Big Wave World Champion), Dean Morrison, Evan Faulks, Jai Abberton, James Adams, Jesse Pollock, Justen 'Jughead' Allport, Kirk Flintoff, Koby Abberton, Laurie Towner, Makua Rothman, Nathan Florence, Perth Standlick, Richie Vaculik, Riley Laing, Russell Bierke (defending champion), Ryan Hipwood and Taj Burrow

*Due to the safety risks associated with large crowds at the location, the event site is closed to spectators when the competition is running. However, you can catch the broadcast live, right here on Coastalwatch and Red Bull TV.
