As the WCT surfers pack up and head to Saquerama in Brazil, the best groms representing six regions including Australia, Brazil, Europe, Indonesia, New Zealand and the US have arrived at Maresias Beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The international event final which first began in 1999 has crowned a couple of famous names including Owen & Tyler Wright, Mason Ho, Gabriel Medina and Nikki Van Dijk. This year the event is taking place at the home beach of former World Champion Gabriel Medina in conjunction with the newly established Medina Institute.

The waiting period officially kicked off today in Maresias, and Gabriel Medina, a former GromSearch International Final Champion, invited the juniors to his Instituto to come and meet Brazil’s future generation of talent.

After a visit to the Instituto, the Medina family, the Instituto groms and the GromSearch International Finalists took part in an opening ceremony at Coconuts Hotel, a main sponsor of the event. A proper Brazilian greeting, the finalists joined in traditional dancing, barbeque and more.

2017 List of Competitors:

Australia: Jay Brown and Sasha Baker
Brazil: Leonardo Barcelos and Louisie Frumento
Europe: Yael Pena (Spain) and Ellie Turner (UK)
Indonesia: Rio Waida and Dhea Natasya Novitasari
New Zealand: Caleb Cutmore and Elin Tawharu

The finals will run between 2 - 7 May with the male and female GromSearch champions crowned just two days before the kick-off of the Oi Rio Pro.
