The Battle Royale created quite a stir among the southern NSW surf community in 2016, and it's been great to see an innovative and now premier event blossoming and back in 2017.

The invitation-only surf comp creates a stage for the top 32 surfers from South Sydney to the Far South Coast of NSW. The venue is anywhere between Stanwell Park and Sandon Point with the main venue expected to be Thirroul Beach.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday October 14th and it will host a lineup of epic entertainment including live music and some of the greatest surfing on this part of the coast.

New this year is a Junior Schools event, The Undercard (co-hosted by Illawarra Sports High Talented Surfing Program). This junior event will launch on Friday October 13th, with the winner securing a position in the main event on the following day.

This year expect to see big names like defending champ Soli Bailey, Ex-CT surfer and new to the area legend Nathan Hedge as well as the likes of Gerringong’s former World Junior Champ, Dean Bowen. You'll also catch 2016 finalist Jared Hickel and Junior Australian Champ Kalani Ball.

The complete invitee surfer list will be released via @dpsurfboards Instagram and this year will include an indigenous wildcard in addition to a women’s final.

Local boardriding clubs from the Wollongong area are involved as well as they nominate their best surfer to compete in the trials event on the prior day for a shot into the main event.

$11,000 prize pool awaits successful contestants with additional prizes to be won by spectators on the day. First place will take home a cool $4k and second cleaning up $2k.

In 2017, the Battle Royal will proudly support the Disabled Surfers Association through the number of local businesses sponsoring the event.
