Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was December 15, 2017

1. Vale Bruce Brown

The man behind the greatest surf film of all time past away peacefully in his sleep this week (the cause is said to have likely been heart failure). Bruce Brown, the director of Endless Summer, has been mourned and celebrated by surfers all over the world following the news.

"Thank you for showing us the world as you saw it," wrote Kelly Slater on Instagram.

While he's best known for Endless Summer, Brown had a catalogue of excellent surfing movies with the same brilliant voice over, comedy and spirit of adventure to his name before the 64/66 classic hit theatres and changed everything – most notably Surfing Hollow Days, the film which features the footage of Phil Edwards surfing Pipe, a wave he and Phil named, for the very first time. Following ES he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documenary for the motorcross film he made with Steve McQueen (On Any Sunday), before returning to surf movies in the early 90s with his sequel Endless Summer II – a film that introduced a whole new generation to his classic Californian drawl and perfect comedic timing, and which is loved just as obsessively as the original.

No matter what your relationship with the work Bruce Brown leaves behind is, it is impossible to overstate the influence it has had on all our surfing lives.

As Kelly Slater wrote to Bruce on his Insty, "You were one of the good guys ... we need more like you."

2. The Showdown at Pipe Has Begun

They ran one solitary day of surfing, well, actually, not even that... let's start again... They ran half a day of surfing of the highly anticipated Billabong Pipe Masters In Memory of Andy Irons and the World Title showdown between John John Florence, Gabriel Medina, Jordy Smith and Julian Wilson it'll feature. Half a day before the swell got turned up to a million feet and turned the North Shore into a wash through city. Before the string of lay-days, however, John John cruised through his Round 1 heat, Gabriel Medina suffered a shock loss and will have to face trials winner Dusty Payne in Round 2, Julian Wilson surfed with fire but too much fire, getting himself a big old interference that sent him to the losers' round, while Jordy Smith made light work in his first heat of the momentous showdown.

It's an exciting time... it will be an exciting time... but for now, we wait.

3. Mick In Hawaii Chatting

While we're on Hawaii, let's dive in to this wonderful little series Rip Curl are putting out where three-time World Champ Mick Fanning talks about things from the balcony of his room at the Rip Curl Pipe house.

4. Let's Watch Taj's Welcome To Epokhe Clip

Which is your favourite Taj? Supergrom Taj – in Alley Oop and Wide Open and qualifying for the CT but not even going on it, all stringbean and energy and potential? Tourlife Taj, the 15 years after the millenium kicked over winning comps, making the best and featuring in the best surf videos, doing the world's best high-fidelity surfing, and having the best time a pro surfer can have all over the world? Or is it Dad Taj –retired from the contraints of the Championship Tour, raising his kid and being a family man while also starting a beer company and enjoying the fruits of the professional freesurfer life on what now has to be the best freesurfer only team in the game? I'm pretty into Dad Taj myself. Dad Taj is awesome!

s5. The Dooley Panama Salsa Episode

This week on the podcast I do with Danny Johnson, Danny could only find wifi – in the Panama he's currently stationed – in a cafe that was blasting salsa music. It makes for a great background soundtrack as we talk Bruce Brown, Jack and Alana's baby, Medina's incredible competitive record in the backhalf of this year as well as a whole bunch of other junk. Click play.

6. Billabong Has a Sweet New vid

Well it looks like Billabong are putting out a new series of clips around the summer marketing of their board shorts and if we’re to judge what they’ll be like off this here first chapter it’s going to be a fast paced thrash of hard, summery surfing and distorted music. And some very very big Ryan Callinan aerials.

7. Check out this film, Life of Glide

Jeremy Jones is a big mountain freeriding snowboarder who In November 2012 was selected by National Geographic Magazine as a nominee for Adventurer of the Year, whatever that means, but it must mean something. In this here film he explores the relationship between snowbaord and surfboard design and features a bit of old-mate Tom Curren. Ten points if you can recognise a joke in here that was also used in Shelter.

Life of Glide was produced by the same people behind Taylor Steele's Proximity as well as the world's biggest and best snowboarding videos of the past coupla years, so you know it's top-notch.

8. Honolua Bay On The Pump

The dreamy righthander on Maui went off yesterday, and there to make the most of it were Dusty Payne, Ian Gentil, Ian Walsh and more. Short, sharp and full of good surfing, perhaps the best clip of the week.

9. The Coffin Brothers' Latest Hawaii Edit

Conner Coffin is a surfer sponsored by Rip Curl who surfs on the Championship Tour with rail to rail power and Parker Coffin is his dynamic goofy-footed younger brother. Back in the blog era, they had a blog together called YoungWiseTails where they’d release regular web edits of their surf adventures and exploits. This week, like it’s 2012, they’ve released a new edit under the YoungWiseTails banner featuring their time in Hawaii so far this winter, and it’s not bad, not bad at all. Best of all, though, is it features an absolute classic Magic Dirt track. Legendary!

10. Lipped Podcast's Year In Review

The fellas from Lipped get down to the nitty gritty of the highlights and lowlights from surfing in 2017 in their latest episode, from Owen Wright's comeback to J-Bay going mental and more. Plus they take a look at the World Title scenarios.

This week in not surfing.

On a little personal note, I was very fortunate earlier this year to do an interview with one of my heroes in Bruce Brown. You can read that Bruce Brown interview, titled So Thank God For Cape St Francis, on the Surfing World site now, but if you don't, just know that Bruce at 79 was just as funny and cool as he sounds in his movies. A total freaking legend. After the icon of our sport and culture sadly passed this week, the ABC asked me to come in and talk about that experience.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
