This Week In Surfing: Look At This Goat-Boat Air! Plus Dusty Payne Lucky To Be Alive, & Get Behind Kael Walsh, He's Good
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 12, 2018
1. Dusty Payne Is Lucky To Be Alive
The biggest piece of news to hit surfing this week was that of Dusty Payne's horrific wipe-out at mid-sized Pipe that saw him suffer an approximate five wave hold down. FIVE WAVES! Holy shit. It's estimated that he would have been under for around one minute and 20 seconds before he got rescued and then revived on the beach. He was then taken to hospital where he is said to be conscious and in a stable condition, recovering in intensive care.
Payne's career has been one riddled with cruel and unfair injuries (and terrible puns based in his last name). Just last year he spent most of 2016 recovering from back surgery. He then qualified for the Pipe Masters through the trials and looked to be regaining some momentum, but alas, here we are again. At this point in the wake of the heavy brush with Backdoor, Dusty, like the rest of the surfing world who care about the guy, would be just stoked he's alive and well.
2. The Quiksilver and Billabong Now Under Same Ownership
Boardriders, the parent company of Quiksilver which in turn is owned by Oaktree Financial, bought out Billabong this week for a cool $380 Million. The last time I opened my wallet, a couple of moths fluttered out of its folds, so when it comes to this kind of business reporting I have no credible opinion on the matter. Billabong have stated that their will be no immediate impact to Billabong jobs, though. So there will be no changes to anything us as surf fans see directly. EG, Billabong will be Billabong, Quiksilver will be Quiksilver, and their teams of surfers and marketing will keep on trucking along as it does. So on and so it goes... However, these things do take a while to show any change, and surf fans will remember similarily, years ago, when Surfing Magazine came under the same ownership as its long legacied rival Surfer Magazine. Everything went along as normal, despite the two magazines working from the same building and answering to the same big bosses. That was until early 2016, when the top brass decided it'd make more sense for Surfer Magazine to envelop Surfing, and Surfing as we knew it became a piece of surfing's past and not its present.
Could the same thing happen to Billabong in the near future? Almost certainly.
3. Filipe Toledo At Waimea
Filipe Toledo is one of surfing's most prolific surf clip dudes. It's just non-stop with this dude, no holding onto clips, no once-a-year big-time movie drops. Just bang bang bang with a surf clip every second day. This one comes from his time in Hawaii and features all the high energy aerial assaut surfing we expect from the World Title contender. It also, quite surprisingly, features a little Waimea cameo too.
4. The Burleigh Single Fin Comp
One of the funnest little weekends on the Australian surfing calander faced off against a dismal swell forecast when the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin comp went down over the weekend. But the shitty conditions didnt deter the hell times, how could it? Taj and Occy were there! you can't have a shitty time if Taj and Occy were there.
5. The Dooley – Are Gath Hats On The Verge of a Comeback?
This week on The Dooley Danny and I talk a bunch of surf garbage about Dusty Payne and the possible re-emergence of helmets in surfing, as well as Gabriel Medina's sexy cameo, and a whole bunch of other garbage. Play it while you're roasting a delicious lamb.
6. Wave Ski Madness!
Yes! Yes, yes, yes. So much yes! Why stand when you can sit, Winston Churchill said that, and he 100% was talking about the high action going down in this goat-boat video just here. Look how inverted this guy, Nathan Le Bars of Brittany, France, is getting here. When is Kai Lenny getting one of these!
7. Kael Walsh Is V Good
Kael Walsh is a young West Ozzy shredder who is actually getting kinda big. He's also one of Australian Surfing's hottest prospects, which if you took a quick look at the results of the World Junior Titles that finished this week, we could do with a couple more of. Get it, Kael.
8. You Ever Been To The Maldives?
How weird is surfing? Some of us sleep in swags or boardbags, next to our stinkiest mates, down dirt roads, eating cans of bake beans in th rain to go suring. Other people, if they've got a heavier, less moth-riddled wallet than my own, go on boats like this one to the Maldives. It's the Four Seasons Explorer, basically a luxury hotel only on water, and only it cruises around to epic surf spots. Hey Tropic Surf, if you're reading this, my birthday is in May.
9. Yago Dora In Hawaii
Mr. Everyone's Favourite CT Rookie, Yago Dora, dropped his own Hawaii highlights clip this week and, damn, is he gonna be a fun surfer to watch this season. Who ya got for rookie of the year? Yago? Colapinto? Wade Carroll? Or someone else? My tip is Ben Simmons. But that's for the NBA. No idea who'll take home the surfing version.
10. Craig Anderson B-Sides
Surf cinematographer Dustin Miller released a whole bunch of B-sides and unused clips this week from Slow Dance. Slow Dance, you'll remember, was the Dane Reynolds directed Craig Anderson movie, and this little belated bonus feature stars its cast of Craig, Dane, Ozzy Wright, Occy, Ryan Burch, Rob Machado, Dion Agius and more. More! More including more goat boar action. Yes!
This Week In Not Surfing
Gabriel Medina is so sexy! So sexy he gets to act all sexy in Brazillian music videos. If this doesn't make your week, then I don't know what will.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
Surfing gets serious around the place this weekend.
