Seven young surfers have joined the winner’s circle at Taj Burrow’s Small Fries, in an action-packed finale to WA's premier junior contest at Yallingup over the weekend.

Celebrating it’s 13th year of competition, the Small Fries rollcall reads like a who's-who of Aussie talents that includes Felicity Palmateer, Jack Robinson, Soli Bailey, Kai Hing, Reef Heazlewood, Zahli Kelly and Kael Walsh to name a few. And this was all the motivation needed to fire up this year's riders looking to join this esteemed list.

For the first time ever, this year the contest was held at Smith’s Reef which saw the best junior surfers and international talents light up perfect 2-3 foot lefthand walls and right tubes that graced the three day event in Taj Burrow’s hometown.

Taj’s local knowledge was invaluable in moving the event site to Smith’s, as well as announcing the finals and dishing out his signature Mohawk haircuts to some pint sized lookalikes.

“It’s such a dreamy day down here, I was a bit nervous this morning when we made the call, but the waves have really turned on,” said Burrow. “It’s just been the most perfect location for a comp, I can’t believe that we've never held the event here before. I couldn’t be happier with how things have gone in 2018 and long live the Small Fries!"

The 16 and Under Boys final saw two of Margaret River’s best prospects Finn Cox and Seth Van Haeften battle it out for bragging rights. Each put on a stellar performance but it was Cox who delivered a radical 9.0 ride to take the lead, and secure his second consecutive victory in the division.

The other sophomore victory of the day went to Yallingyup’s own Emma Cattlin who took out the U16’s girls over Margaret River’s Maddie Cawood in a close exchange. Cattlin showed promise of big things ahead using powerful on-rail surfing to post a 15.85 heat total and leave Cawood chasing an excellent score in the closing minutes.

Other winners of the day included Solomon Pogue-Englert (Gracetown, WA) and Zali Hewson (Margaret River, WA) who claimed Men’s and Women’s U14’s victories respectively each displaying a progressive repertoire to edge out their opponents. In the U12’s divisions it was Ryan Kainalo and Willow Hardy who took podium and for the U10’s saw a positively elated Remy North (Dunsborough, WA) claim his first ever junior event.
