The Best Alley-Oop of All Time, Pumping Cloudbreak and Is Zeke Lau the Coolest Surfer on Tour?
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was May 25, 2018
1. Albee Layer Level's Up Again
This air is interesting on two levels. One, for the sheer ridiculousness of the air itself, a double alley oop, just wild. Two, it comes in (apparently) the very first session after he visited the Waco, Texas wave pool where he was able to hit an air ramp section on repeat like a skateboarder with a quarter-pipe. "Wave pools work, turns out," says Layer at the end of the clip. Sure, he's one of the best aerialists in the world, but imagine a full season, or multiple seasons, on one of these Waco, Texas type pools for any surfer with a bit of talent, and what they'll be able to pull off in the ocean following that kind of repetition. The future is going to be outrageous.
2. Filipe Won Rio, Zeke Gets A Rule Named After Him (Kinda)
It feels like forever ago, doesn't it? But nup, it was only last weekend that Filipe made it official with his win at Rio, after he spiritually won the event when he stomped that huge air. He held off Wade Carmichael in the final, whose second place finish has elevated him into the top five, very very impressive for a rookie. Other notable rankings are Julian Wilson now clear on top at no.1, Filipe behind him in second, Italo Ferreira third and Gabby Medina in fourth. That top five right there is an Australia Brazil sandwich.
Wilson's 3rd place finish might be most significant, in that of the three events that have finished, he is the only surfer to have made it to the semis more than once. Consistency wins World Titles, guys.
Below is the #TourNotes clip from the event, in which Zeke Lau addresses a rule change the WSL has implimented around "Excessive Hassling". Fun. We can call it the Zeke Lau rule from here on.
3. Speaking of Zeke...
Is he the sickest guy on tour at the moment? How good are these edits he drops with the mumble-rap new school hip hop trap music or whatever it is you call it? You know, people are worried about the future of surfing without Kelly, Mick, Taj etc... but between guys like Zeke, Gabby, Filipe and John John, the tour is going to be soooo rad for the next decade.
4. Jackson Dorian Is Bloody Good
The son of Shane Dorian is 11 years old and shredding ike a mad gremlin. "My favourite session with my dad is probably all of them," he says in this clip. It's exciting to think about what kind of future this happy, talented grommet could have. World titles? Sure. Big wave exploits? Why not? But what this could really mean is something bigger and more important than any of that. What this could really deliver for us die hard surf fans is something that we all want so bad we don't even know we want it yet. it's a movie. It will be released around 2028. And it will be called In God's Hands 2: Mickey's Revenge. Make it happen, universe.
5. The Corona Bali Pro Got a Name Change
It is now known as the Corona Bali Protected, with the idea of bringing attention to plastic pollution in the ocean. Its an initiative by Corona, but obviously with the support of the WSL.
"This name change is aimed at sounding the alarm on one of the biggest threats to the survival of the world’s oceans: marine plastic pollution. It stands for the vision of turning Bali into a pilot project, a blueprint for solving this global environmental issue by implementing the Parley AIR Strategy," reads the WSL press release announcing the news.
The initiative will be part of Corona's commitment with Parley to protect 100 islands from plastic poillution by 2020. And if it sounds a little bit awkward on the broadcast (say it out loud, "Welcome back to the Corona Bali Protected..."), it's worth it.
The event starts on Sunday, so get your Fantasy teams in. My pick? Julian Wilson to win everything. EVERYTHING!
6. Part 2 of Koa and Co At Cloudbreak
Remember last week when Koa Rothman and an entourage of young Hawaiian stars that aren’t John John Florence (Nathan Florence, Ivan Florence, Billy Kemper, and Koa Smith) went to Fiji and the best part of the clip was the teaser for part 2? Well this is part 2. Is Cloudbreak the best wave in the world? Yeah, I think so.
7. The Most Cooked Brand In Wave Riding Is Back
DRAG is that bodyboarding brand that has surfers like Craig Anderson and Chippa Wilson attached to their entourage. They've put out some of the most creative stuff in the realm of surf culture at the moment. And, good news, they're coming back with a second movie. Their first movie – RIP – was amazing , and if you want to watch it, bad news, you can't. They deleted it from the Internet. Jerks. But you can see its sequel at these venues on these dates:
Thursday May 31 – The Stoke Factory, Wollongong
Friday June 1 – The Family Hotel, Newcastle
Saturday June 2 – The Drag Lab, Byron Bay
8. A Very Pretty Nazare Video
The best compliment I think you can give to a surf clip is calling it Jon Frank-esque, and this nine minute Portuguese short – with an original Mogwai sorta soundtrack – is almost Jon Frank-esque. Lovely.
9. Ronnie Blakey On Ain't That Swell
Surfing's no.1 podcast, Ain't That Swell, dropped a corker of an episode this week with guest hosts Danny Johson and Ronnie Blakey added to the line-up. Of all the podcasts releases this week, this is without a doubt one of them. 100%
10. European Pipe Goes Boom
Featuring Nic Von Rupp and a bunch of names I don't know but probably should (Miguel Blanco, Manuel Lezcano Cruz, Gines Diaz and Franito Saenz), Dusty Daze is a clip from somewhere out of Europe that has absolutely thumping coldwater Banzai Pipeline action. It's good.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
