It's Pumping at J-Bay for the First Women's CT in 18 Years, the Return of Air Shows, & an Alaia in the Kelly Pool
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was July 13, 2018
1. The Women's J-Bay Event Is Running For The First Time In Forever
It's running right now and it's pumping! If you're reading this on Friday afternoon, you should stop whatever you're doing, get some snacks, get a comfortable chair and lock yourself in for a night of premium WSL surfing. The last time the ladies competed at the blue ribbon location of Jeffreys Bay was way back in 2000 (Megan Abubo won), meaning not a single surfer on the current Championship Tour has competed there. They've run a single day already, where we lost Sally Fitzgibbons and Courtney Conlogue (Tyler Wright also dropped out of the event due to illness). They'll be running all the way through to the final tonight, crowning a champ, which'll surely be pivotal to the excellent, razor-sharp World Title race between Lakey Peterson and Steph Gilmore that's going down at the moment. Whatever happens over the next couple of hours, it'll likely be a major highlight of someone's World Title year. Get on it!
2. Laurie Towner Is a Treasure
It's a Laurie Towner festival! After heading to Cloudbreak for the swell of the year, featuring in web clips all over the place, and scoring the latest cover of Surfing World, comes this wonderful clip from the crew that helped Towner get to Fiji in the first place, Need Essentials. In the clip Towner talks us through the mindset he has around tackling an event like this. It's beautifully shot and edited and a must watch clip for Aussie surf fans (with a handy Windy Hills song on the soundtrack, too). Onya Loz!
3. Bryce Young Forever
For Vissla, and in classic Vissla fashion, is this wickedly stylish clip that features Cam Richards, Eric Geiselman, Derrick Disney, Andrew Jacobson, Gunner Day and the most watchable surfer getting around, Bryce Young. Cold water, warm water, one-foot disco-floaters, beautiful boards, long tropical tubes… how do you fit so many beautiful elements of surfing into one compact clip? Love that little outro song as well. Bravo.
4. Kael Walsh In Chile
Kael Walsh, one of our finest bright young hopes, whom you might remember from going hard at making Margaret River Pro earlier this year, went to Chile recently. While he was there he backdoored a bunch of rights, pigdogged some nuggety lefts, and threw a couple of wild airs. Not a bad little trip then. Can’t wait to see more and more and more of this grom.
5. Another New Wave Pool!
Wave pool technology is moving at such a fast rate these days that it's hard to keep up with every single development, but it turns out that someone has made the perfect recreation of my old local North Collaroy at its most pumping!
6. Another Indie Wetsuit Clip, This One With Thick Tuberiding
Volte Wetsuits have really seemed to forge a clear taste when it comes to picking team riders – no nonsense fellas that can pack a tube. Damien Hobgood’s here, starring, to remind us how good he is in case we’d forgotten (how freaking nice is that righthand point he threads?), while Mick Corbett sticks one of the biggest acid drops you’ll see in 2018. Underrated West Aussie Jerome Forrest and Duran is-that-his-real-name Barr rounding out the rest of the clip. (Duran Barr?!)
7. Air Shows Are Back
Air comps are coming back! The WSL announced on Thursday that alongside the Surf Ranch Pro Air Exhibition, the Quiksilver Pro France will also feature “the Air Invitational”, with Josh Kerr as event director. Kerrsy, as you probably remember, was the air show World Champ back when there was such a thing. The surfers on display will be a mix of aerial free surfers, CT surfers and “social fan voted surfers”. Chippa Wilson, Filipe Toledo, Mikey Wright and Albee Layer are already signed on to be involved, which means it will be up to us to make sure Zoltan the Magician Torkas gets his spot on the line-up.
As much as I adore some of those surfers involved, you can pile this in with the big wave world tour, the Longboard World Tour, and the Picnic At Hanging Rock reboot in the “things I probably won’t watch, even if I say I will” file
8. An Alaia In The Wave Pool
Remember 2012, when Alaias were all the rage? Funny how that dissipated, especially considering they've gotten no less sick when they get going on a smooth runner. Perhaps it was the earnest revelry they seemed to come with in conjunction with the rise of the extreme don't-ever-take-anything-serious approach of the finless foamie movement that's exploded since. Either way, icon Dan Malloy rode an alaia in the Kelly Slater pool and it was cool. Sign me up for anything the Malloys are doing, ever.
9. Oh look, a guide to J-Bay
There is so much assumed knowledge in surf culture that it's nice when little clips like this one by Rip Curl and Rosy Hodge pop up. Here are the basics on one of the top five (gotta be, right?) waves in the world, Jeffreys Bay.
10. Josh Kerr Scores Very Good Ments
This clip is dubbed as a retirement celebration trip, and, sure, why not? It’s Josh Kerr having the time of his life in the Mentawai Islands with his family. The versatility of a man who’s won a big wave world tour event, won an air series world title, and made too many finals of CT events is on show here in some paaaaaaa-umping Indonesian waves. I reckon Red Bull could have sprung for an actual song here, though.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good week everyone.
