COASTALWATCH | NEWS
Like going back in time... (to when Australia dominated surfing)
WSL's returning of the Masters Titles, named the Azores Airlines World Masters Championship, has been the surprise hit of 2018. And in the early hours of Sunday/Monday morning Aus time the champs of 2018 got crowned: An Australian sweep.
– Rob Bain won the Men's Grand Masters division over Cheyne Horan.
– Layne Beachley won the Women's Masters over Rochelle Ballard.
– Dave Macaulay the Men's Masters division over Shane Beschen.
The week has been stoke filled for surfer and viewer alike. For the surfers, catching up with their contemporaries and feeling the thrill of high level comp surfing again. For the viewer, the joy of seeing the likes of Hoy, Kong, Luke Egan Terry Richo, Dooma Hardman, Pauline Menczer, Pam Burridge, Jake Pato, Simon Anderson, Tom Curren Derek Ho... the list went on and on and on.
For a good indication of the stoke of this thing, here's Dave Macaulay's quote from the press release:
“I was so stoked for Bainy but I couldn’t get too emotional cause I had that heat right after. It’s been an unbelievable week, we’ve had an absolute ball. The people here were so friendly and it’s so beautiful, I’d come back for a holiday any day. I’ve had a very fortunate life, being able to keep surfing after the tour, all my kids surf and it’s just insane.”
And here's an Instagram from World No.16, and daughter of the new World Masters Champion, Bronte Macaulay:
