"People say each year that the kids are another level better, but watching, especially the under 6’s surf today, it’s a reality." - Barton Lynch

Yesterday saw Hurley and Barton Lynch’s BL’s Blast Off kick off at Avalon Beach. Taj Burrow was in attendance and confirmed there weren’t just 385 groms ripping it up, but so many micro groms there is now an under 6 division. Mental!

The event isn’t just about surfing heats – it also gives the kids a chance to get valuable feedback and learn. They are videoed while they compete and have professional post-heat analysis afterwards, courtesy of the Hurley Surf Club team.

“Many of these kids would never have had coaching or professional feedback on their surfing and this is the best way for them to be supported and experience that for the first time,” explains Barton.

Up the coast in glorious four-foot Merewether, the Rip Curl GromSearch National Series presented by Flight Centre wrapped up. Six new champs were crowned including Jamie Thomson from Narrabeen, Carly Shanahan from Wooli, the incredibly named Oscar Salt from Boomerang Beach, Ellie Harrison from Barwon Heads and Riley Munro and Quincy Symonds from Tweed.

It was the 20th anniversary of the event, which two-time world champ Tyler Wright reckons helped pave the way for her career. “It was definitely the best way to prepare for competition on the QS and the CT, and it was a really fun environment too,” she remembers.

Previous winners are a who’s who of future champs – including Tyler, Gabriel Medina, Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson, Jordy Smith, Kolohe Andino and Sally Fitz - so re-read the list above and lock in some future superstars to keep an eye out for.
