Bondi Beach Closed As Big Shark Stalks Surfers
There’s probably nowhere you’d feel safer from the men in grey suits than a crowded, 2ft day at Bondi Beach - but the reality is, sharks can and do appear at just about any beach and at any old time. As a case in point, at around lunchtime today, local 40year old surfer and father of two Mick Malouf had his life flash before his eyes as he came within a bees leg of becoming lunch himself.

The Coastalwatch Bondi Camera revealed a very empty lineup in the wake of the sighting.
As Mick paddled for a wave, an estimated 12 to 15ft shark swam up behind him – and it was only the frantic calls of another local surfer, Beau Walker, that had Mick scrambling to shore. Of course, Mick didn’t see the shark himself, but he rightly feels he's just used up one of his nine lives.
A quick call to the Bondi Lifeguards revealed a shark was spotted earlier, just off North Bondi – but from their estimates the animal was only around 8ft long. Either way, they have closed the beach for the rest of the day in light of the double sightings. We’ll probably never know whether or not is was the same shark misjudged or perhaps another, larger beast – but the reality is it’s no laughing matter. Back in 2009, local surfer Glen Orgias lost his hand to what was judged to be a juvenile Great While at South Bondi – and it’s worth keeping in mind he was hit amongst a crew of about a dozen surfers.

Mick Malouf, a regular out at Bondi had his closest call yet at his home break.
