Brad Norris Is a Tube King, Ry Craike's Best Clip Ever, and the Burleigh Single Fin Comp Rules
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Nine Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 11, 2019
1. Ry Craike's Begun The Year With A Banger
West Aussie Ry Craike delivers 7 minutes of epic with Timeless Land – a Go-Pro only (bar one clip), point-of-view barrel fest. Arguably, Craikey's career best video? It's very early, but let's put this as the placeholder for top clip of 2019 for the time being.
Not only that, Craikey had a kid this week! River Koa Craike! Onya Craikey.
2. Burleigh Single Fin Festival Was A Corker
The Burleigh Single Fin Festival comp is an absolute rippr of a weekend, and last weekend it went down in some not-too-shabby conditions. Joel Parkinson, fresh into retirement, took out the event once again. Hit play to see some legends tap into some classic lines on the famed pointbreak that birthed man-on-man pro surfing.
3. Weird Waves Are The Best – Pumping Great Lakes
How good are weird waves? So good that Vans have dedicated a new YouTube series to them. Episode 1 hits the Great Lakes of North America, where they get some, surely super-rare, actually very good waves. As someone who grew up surfing wind slop bay-waves in Port Phillip Bay, this kind of content hits close to the heart. Stoked!
4. Softboards Rule
The 88 Softboards Army grows with every day. And why not? They’re having fun, sliding unique lines, and getting pitted while doing so. Here’s a 9 minute Jack Coleman clip (which you know is going to be good-weird) that features cameos of Ozzie Wright and Steph Gilmore, and artist Brodie Jackson from my Year 9 Homeroom class – as well as the regular band of misfits you’ll see on the East Coast of Aus on the soft craft every day.
5. The Brad Norris Highlight Reel Is Bonkers With Barrels
The video description for this clip is “@Bradleynorris”. That’s it. The title of the clip is Standard Citizen. So.... not a lot of info to work with here, not a big sell going on at all, but sheeesh does he not need it cause this clip is some absolutely unreal tube riding in heavy and perfect and heavily perfect slabby waves. West Australian plumber Brad Norris is the ultimate king of the core lords!
6. Kelly On His New Tomo In Hawaii
Let’s watch Kelly Slater test out a new 5’3” Tomo Cymatic in Hawaii. Short and sharp, the old man still has it, huh?
7. Filipe In Hawaii
Staying in Hawaii for a minute, a five minute highlight edit of Filipe Toledo’s time in the islands. The World Title contender is oft criticised for skipping the big stuff, but he made long strides to address that in 2018, as he seems to do with a part of his surfing every year. What do you think? Can he win the Title in 2019? (The answer is yes.)
8. Jamie O'Brien, Softboards and Pipeline
While Koa Rothman’s YouTube channel This Is Livin' is gaining, Jamie O’Brien’s is the OG leader of the vlog game in the surf world. He’s a beacon of positivity and fun with wild Pipeline shooting pulling it together. And the whole thing only gets better and better when they leave the tired joke of bullying his pet Poopies behind. This episode piqued my interest cause he rides a softboard out at Pipe, which is always fun and interesting. That part starts at around the 15 minute mark.
9. Brendon Gibbens Is On Banks Now
Cluster alumni Brendon Gibbens has joined the Banks team. That’s nice news, cause it means that we get a solid and quick clip of the South African freesurfer showing us why he gets to be in Kai Neville’s movies when they come around. It’s cause he rips!
10. Meet Alan Van Gysen, Surf Photog Explorer Man
South African photographer Alan Van Gysen is one of the all-time good guys. Working with him through texts and emails when pulling magazines together has always been a delight. And he often delivers some of the most diverse and off the beaten track surf photographs you ever get to see in surf print. Here’s a six minute documentary on the guy while on location finding waves in Equatorial Guinea. Give it a go!
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. C'mon Socceroos!
