The Great One will be back in Manly in March

Well this is fun. The WSL have announced today that the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro – a QS6000 that runs March 18-24 at Manly Beach – will be boosted by genuine superstar quality this year when Kelly Slater joins the competition in prep for what may or may not be his last year on the Championship Tour.

Manly, of course, is a location of immense importance to surfing history, which makes the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro a comp of some cultural significance – a fact not lost on Kelly Slater. The 11 time World Champ saying in today's press release:

"There’s a lot of history dating back to surfing being introduced at Freshwater some hundred years ago by Duke and many years later hosting some classic events with legendary performances by Larry Blair and Wayne Lynch. The more recent years have shown some serious highlights for tour surfers such as Julian Wilson and as a jumpstart for rookies and QS grinders looking to stamp their mark on the start of the year. It should be a fun week.”

Slater himself is no stranger to the area, having lived on and off in Avalon for 15 years, he's been spotted on rare occasions to be surfing in the various line-ups up and down the Northern Beaches over the years – surprising locals like an appearance of Tasmanian Tiger.

Slater's inclusion in the Sydney event means that surf fans and Kelly fans from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, aaaaand Western Australia will have the opportunity to see the greatest of all time surf live this year (poor South Aus, poor Tassie:( ).

Last year's Men's and Women's Sydney Surf Pro events were won by Nikki Van Dijk and Deivid Silva, respectively, both of which finished in the QS Top 10 for 2018, qualifying for this year's Championship Tour.
