Surfer Found Guilty of Assault on Ex-Pro Jodie Cooper

Lennox Head surfer Mark Thomson will be assessed for a community work order after a hearing in Ballina Local Court on Friday.

The hearing follows an alleged assault on ex-professional surfer Jodie Cooper at Lennox last year. Cooper said she was held underwater by Thomson after a dispute over a wave. She reported it to police after video footage of part of the incident surfaced.

Police then charged Thomson with assault. He was found guilty yesterday by magistrate, Karen Stafford, who rejected Thomson’s defence that he was acting in self-defence after having been in an altercation with another unknown surfer. The magistrate then made the order for the community work order assessment.

The case drew a lot of attention after an earlier hearing revealed that Cooper had feigned unconsciousness to escape the situation.
