Sentencing brings case of assault on Jodie Cooper to a close

Lennox Head surfer Mark Thomson, 54, has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service following his conviction for assaulting ex-professional surfer Jodie Cooper at Lennox last year.

Thomson was convicted on one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by magistrate Karen Stapleton after a series of hearings in Ballina Local Court. He has been placed under a two-year Community Corrections Order, which is a type of penalty designed for cases deemed not quite prison-worthy but seen as too serious to be dealt with by a fine or lesser penalty.

The sentencing brings to an end a case that’s been a source of much discussion both among the LeBa area’s surfing population and surfers worldwide. Cooper is well known for both her successful pro career through the ‘80s and ‘90s, and for her stunt double work for the actor Lori Petty in the movie Point Break.
