Forecast Issued Tuesday, August 20, 2019

Indonesia’s swell window is stacked up with overlapping trains of large, long-period SW groundswell that extend far beyond the horizon, deep into the Southern Indian Ocean. In this instance, the extremely remote origins of these groundswells (think 4,000 to 4,500 nautical miles away from Indonesia) means they must travel for a full week before they begin making landfall. That means the swell is already in the water and is inexorably closing the distance on the Archipelago. The leading edge of a first, long-period groundswell is projected to start showing up at high periods (albeit at very small heights) of 18 to 20 seconds on Thursday, leading in many days of large and consistent SW groundswell, pretty well enduring right through to the end of the month.
