On Friday 18 October, the SurfAid Cup returns to Manly. The SurfAid Cup, started in Manly in 2011 and now a global event series that has raised over $3m for humanitarian NGO SurfAid, will run in its ninth year.
SurfAid was founded in 2000 by intrepid surfers while on a surf trip in the Mentawai Islands. Most recently, the NGO has focussed on mother and child health through clean water and sanitation, basic healthcare and improved nutrition projects. SurfAid partners with DFAT and the Australian surf community to achieve positive human development outcomes in isolated villages in the Indonesian archipelago.
The SurfAid Cup, a tag team style surf comp that pairs teams who fundraise to enter with pro surfers who volunteer their time, is SurfAid’s principal fundraiser.
Felicity Palmateer, one of the pro surfers who'll be competing in local business teams on the day, says:
"I love working alongside the SurfAid crew. The events and fundraisers are always fun, but most importantly, the effects are real. I've witnessed firsthand the positive change brought about by the funds raised, the education, the awareness and the hands-on approach that SurfAid and their teams deliver to the people of Indonesia and the Mentawaii Island communities. Helping SurfAid helps others!"
The SurfAid Cup Manly has been supported by pro surfers Toby Martin, Richie Vas, Andy King, Rob Bain, Jarrad Howse, Matt Griggs, Samson Coulter, Gerard McCallum, Blake Levett, Jamie Krupps, Flick Palmateer, Kobi Clements, Jamie Thomson, Grayson Hinrichs and Harry McCabe.
This year’s event will see teams from Macquarie Inloop, Beecraft, Belle Property, GSI, BlackRock, BT Finance, USANA, Hurley, GPT, Alan Hall, Asquire Property, The Perfect Wave, World Nomads, The Australian Surfing Lawyers, Tableau software, The Rashie Company, 3G-S and Stone & Wood compete for top fundraising team and the surfing champion title.
It'll be a ripper day.
