The first surf comp in an Aussie pool, like, ever?

Ever since the URBNSURF wave pool at Tullamarine, Melbourne turned the taps on and started generating surfable waves, every fresh little development with the tub has piqued our interest. First, images of empty tubes, then pro surfers tackling heavy looking mini-slabs, then unlocking the gates as the first ever open-to-the public legitmate surfing wave pool in the country just last month, and now this: the news that it will be the venue of the first ever surfing event to run in a wave pool in Australia.

Called "The 2020 Melbourne Pool Party presented by URBNSURF", it's borne out of the partnership the Melbourne pool signed and announced with Surfing Victoria back in December, which amongst the details of coaching programs and training facilities also included that URBNSURF would have a go at providing "all Victorian coastal boardriders clubs with the opportunity to host a 'club round' competition at the park free of charge."

This comp is, of course, no boardriders, but it will be a glimpse of just how a formatted surf comp in the unique surf environment could look in the future – be that a boardriders, an air show, or perhaps something a little more high stakes.

Let's have a read of the  Surfing Vic presser with more info on this 2020 Melbourne Pool Party:

Surfing Victoria and URBNSURF will be bringing together the top Victorian surfers for the first ever competition showcasing Australia’s first surf park and the depth of Victorian surfing. Featuring DJs, Food Trucks, Expression Sessions and over $3000 in prizes, the 2020 Melbourne Pool Party will re-define surfing competitions in the new decade.

'Being able to host the first ever wave pool event in Australia alongside the URBNSURF team is amazing' said Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson.

'We will be inviting 48 of Victoria’s top surfers, and with this new format we can hopefully create a fun and entertaining day of surfing!'

The format will mimic a competitive snowboarding event, with a leader board throughout the day, and surfers periodically being eliminated from the event.

There will also be longboard and bodyboard elements to the event, with riders invited based off Victorian State Rankings.

'We’re stoked to be working closely with Surfing Victoria to host Australia’s first wave pool surfing event at URBNSURF Melbourne, with the best shortboarders, longboarders and bodyboarders in the State battling it out for the title,' said URBNSURF’s Founder and Director, Andrew Ross.

And the best bit, it's going down terribly soon: Sunday March 15 to be precise. That's the day after the Sydey Surf Pro QS event wraps up, and a week and a half before the the opening event of the CT on the Gold Coast.

More info on this event as it comes to hand. Till then, here's a clip of a face-painted Ozzie Wright in the tub.
