COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was May 22 2020

1. A New Wedgey Dane Clip

One time ten years ago I took a boat over a river with Laurie Towner and some others to a wave that looked a bit like this one. When we returned to the boat we found that someone had put a bunch of fish heads in it while they'd surfed. The guy is from the same postcode and is one of the most beloved characters in Australian surfing, and still he got fish heads. Surfing is funny like that. That story has nothing to do with this fresh video from Dane Reynolds' new blog, which, subjectively, is the best thing in surfer media right now.

2. Carissa's Doco Came Out

Four time World Champ, Carissa Moore is not just a superstar of surfing, but inarguably one of the all-time greats of the sport. Makes sense then that Red Bull have gone and produced an impressive and highly stylised feature length profile doco on the Champ, centred around her 2019 campaign to win the World Title and qualify for the Olympics. That's such a poorly written sentence. I'm sorry. I could edit it, but I don't want to right now. Editing is for people who are stuck in the past. And I refuse to look back. Unless it's to look back on the career of all time great Carissa Moore.

3. Tyler Wright Was on 60 Minutes

Our two-time World Champ went on the biggest current affairs show in the country to open up about her battles with post-viral syndrome. Like most instances of surfing being presented by mainstream media, it's pretty corny, but damned if you can get through this without becoming a mad fan of Tyler. She rules!

4. New Pool Footage from the Newest Pool

That Palm Springs Resort pool treated us to some fresh footage this week, featuring Blair Conklin (that skimboarder dude) Kalani Robb, a remote control toy surfer, and friends. The last time we saw this was in Dylan Graves' Weird Waves series. The pool still looks relatively unfinished, so it might be too early to judge... but let's judge it anyway! Looks kinda meh, doesn't it? I mean, it would be a really fun day, for sure, but nothing on the cold water waves going unridden out at Tullamarine at the moment. However, if a session here comes with an audio track of the camera-man losing his mind every time you get one, it might be the best pool innovation yet. You can't hate on stoke.

5. We All Like Sean Mawson

Because my brain is stupid, I constantly combine surfers Shaun Manners and Sean Mawson, to make one single super surfer. This is just like when I thought Vaughan, Ronnie and Adam Blakey were the same person working in surf print media, when in reality they are actually three seperate people and surf print media hardly exists any more. Sean Mawson, though, is a humble south coast NSW charger who has really nice style and deserves all of our respect. And this is a real sick clip of the guy from Zion wetsuits here, get around it.

6. Speaking of the Blakey Brothers

Make sure you tune in to Channel 9 this Sunday at midday to watch the Australian Surfing Awards and the Hall of Fame. It looks like a really nice mix of reverence and fun. Plus, it's an Aussie surfing awards show on free to air television on a weekend... that's worth supporting! Who do you think will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year?

7. O'Neill Wave of the Winter, the Movie

Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of waves get ridden at Pipeline every Hawaiian winter, and oh so many of them are mind-bogglingly insane. Surfline's O'Neill Wave of the Winter collated the best of them to award the Wave of the Winter, and they made this epic movie in the process. Mental...

8. The Occ-Cast With the Groms

Occy gets Griffin Colapinto, Seth Moniz and Ethan Ewing on his home brew pod-show, and he's branding them the "new Trilogy", following the former Billabong youthful powerhouse of Taj, Andy and Parko, which, you know what, is a pretty fun comparison. Most of the chat is about their vid For Whom the Atolls.

9. A Day in the Life of Mitchy Parko

I don't live there, so I don't know for real, but I get the impression that Mitch Parkinson is the guy at Snapper when it's on these days. During a nice of run of swell this week he showed us his regular daily routine and maybe kind of just a little bit of breaking the law, on camera, to go surfing.

10. Mason Testing Out Those New Fins

Hey, if you want to read an in-depth Nick Carroll review of these fins, we've got that right over here. In this vid Mase surfs them on four different boards and discusses how they felt at the end. Get money get paid, Mase!

And that was this weekin surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
