Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was October 30 2020

1. Aussie Billabong Team Doing Aussie Shredding

A dolewave soundtracked Billabong team-vid stacked with good surfing and fun times that clocks in at just over 11 minutes, this is a ripper of a video. Starring pretty well everyone (Occy, Parko, Creed McTaggart, Ethan Ewing, Jack Freestone, Griffin Colapinto, Ryan Callinan, Shaun Manners, Tai ‘Buddha’ Graham, Otis Carey, Liam O’Brien, Dakoda Walters, Micah Margieson and more), there's something Australia-surf soaked about this movie that leaves you wistful for the old summer-loving surf videos of year's past. You wonder just how they pulled that very specific feeling off until you see who is behind the edit – Toby Cregan. The surf filmmaker turned Skegss bassplayer/vocalist/songwriter has really become the master of retaining that old surf video stoke sensibility and delivering it in the awkward format of the modern web edit. I'm not sure anyone can do it as well as him. And it rules. It's been a hot week for surf clips, but this is the perfect one to take us into the weekend.

2. Ireland Biggest Ever, Mental

They're calling this wave a contender for the biggest ever surfed in Ireland, which if you've watched clips coming out of that surf scene the last decade you'll know is quite a wild feat. Says Magic Seaweed:

"Conor Maguire pulled into one of the biggest waves we've ever seen in Ireland – and that is no exaggeration. This monster is comparable to Code Red Teahupoo in its magnitude and Cloudbreak 2018 in its scope – and it could be up there as the defining moment of this colossal XXL swell that's rumbling Europe right now."

3. A Fresh Dane Clip

Far out, how good is Pavement? And how good is Dane Reynolds? Dane suffered the loss of his older brother Brek and used his new blog Chapter11.tv to write a long thoughtful and candid eulogy on his life and their relationship to each other and surfing, and published this surf clip of the two of them (along with surfing by Eithan Osborne and other Cali/Venturians) too. Surfing and blogging and web edits is what Dane does best – and it’s quite a nice thought that it's in these forms that he tributes his sibling.

4. Nazaré Has Been Deathly Big

Former Hurricane Epsilon sent "50-70’ faces" to the Portugese big wave spot, which is one of the biggest swells for the region at this time of year in history. Surfline ran a live commentary with elite Aussie waterman Jamie Mitchell and Forecasters Kevin Wallis and Kurt Korte over their live surf cam and it was a fascinating spectacle. The commentary starts at the 13.40 mark.

5. Fresh John John Clip

It’s always a delight when the enigmatic superstar of surfing graces us and the internet with some fresh free surfing footage. This is 26 waves from home, home being Rocky Point. And the dude, as per usual, is ripping. John John surfs like I would if I was playing surfing as a video game and I had the setting lowered to easy level, it’s all a cakewalk for him.

6. Korean Wave Pool Super Clip

You might remember the footage of the new WaveGarden pool that’s opened up in South Korea, of all places, and you might remember there was a fella doing some pretty ridiculous looking aerials in it… well that guy was Calfornian Jacob "Zeke" Szekely and this week he released his own high performance edit from his time there. It's pretty impressive, particularly coming from a surfer we've not really heard of in this part of the world. It might be one of the most versatile pool edits released in surf pool edit history (a long history that one is) – finger flip airs, perfect tubes, giant air revs, alley-oops, supermans (I though they were dead?) and combos of the lot… plus, a robot.

7. The History of Skeleton Bay

"It's like a scene out of Star Wars..."

Here is a wonderful mini-documentary on one of the most interesting waves in the world, Skeleton Bay Namibia. "Thirty years ago, it didn't even exist..." What? The more you hear all these people talk about this thing, the more intriguing it becomes. If you're curious about waves in general, this is 17 minutes well spent.

8. Lakey Peterson's Teahupo'o Vlog

Californinan/faux-Victorian Lakey Peterson is prepping for the future by heading to Tahiti and getting some hours in at Teahupo'o before it becomes a part of the Women's side of the Championship Tour. As she learns to handle the spot, it gives a great perspective of a wave we've seen so many times broken down to a fundamental level. Plus there's plenty of the usual surf travel vlog faire, a poisson crus recipe, and tubes of course. Perfect Tahitian tubes.

9. Rad Surf Movie, Cosmic Torchings

A surreal independent 18 minute surf movie starring Mckenzie Bowden and friends that includes a heap of graceful logging as well as your regular shortboard shredding. The skits seem to run the basic comedy premise of playing dress-ups to poppy music, but it's no harm, a bit of fun, whatever. Good on 'em.

10. Josh and Sierra Kerr Getting Tubed Off Their Heads in Indo

The father daughter duo went to the Mentawai Islands and scored pumping Bank Vaults last week, as seen in this under-edited raw footage clip. It also includes some nice tuberides by 13-year-old Erin Brooks as well as Bettylou Sakura Johnson and Caity Simmers. It's a little bit cool to see the non-makes of a pumping session as well as the bombs, don't you reckon?

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
