Pipeline

Pipeline

Another weird day has greeted us in the land of Aloha. Last nights TV surf forecast had the buoys already registering a new north west swell and they were predicting 10' sets at first light this morning.

At 6.30 am there were 6'-8' sets coming in a Pipeline and the organisers of the Billabong Pipeline masters pushed the 'Go' button but by 7.30am they'd pulled back on their call and put the event on hold and started at 9.30am with 40 minute heats.

As contestants started to arrive at the beach around 8am there weren't any waves. Pipe was a blown out mess. Over the next hour the new swell started to pulse with sets every 20 minutes or so and it looks like they will run a round of the contest today. Trades are strong from the North East. 'Breezy' is the official term. Heavy side shore is the real story and they could get stronger during the day. Surf is in the 6' plus range and it's going to an interesting day as member of the Top 45 come up against the local 16 Pipeline specialists. Probably wont be as interesting as the Garcia vs Padaratz incident on day one of the event.
