Another day on the North Shore and another rain squall. We seemed to be stuck in a strong easterly Trade Wind situation which is bringing cloud, strong winds and 'windward and marka showers' to the whole island chain. The Trades are going to be so strong today that a 'Small Craft Advisory' is in effect for the whole of the Hawaiian waters. There is also a 'High Surf Advisory' for east facing shores. It's all wind swell and very messy. The weather pattern which has been dominated by a huge high pressure system south of the islands has turned the North Shore into a less than desirable place over the past few weeks. The strong trades have played havoc with the swell forecasts. A perfect example was yesterday, with the long range forecast predicting 'Eddie' size waves which translate to wave faces of 30'+, in reality the surf along the 'Seven Mile' Miracle' was lucky to be in the 3' range. The forecast for today is a swell in the 8'-10' range. It might build during the day but right now it's grey, overcast, windy with light rain and blown out surf in the 3' range. What happened to that 30' day? We didn't see it.

The funny thing is that I have just read the Surf Alert for south east Queensland as my time on the North Shore is coming to an end and guess what? I'm heading home to Coolangatta with strong south easterly trades, overcast skies and a storm swell that could hang around for a week. I'll have no trouble adapting because this winter season on the North Shore has given me plenty of practice.
