The same powerful low that delivered the recent Bass Straight swell (see article on Coastalwatch ) also pushed some solid waves into Tasmania’s Shipstern Bluff. On Monday the 14th despite the swell being very slow and at times near flat, the local crew of Marti Para, Mikey Brennan, Tyler Holmer Cross, Benny Richo and Brooke Phillips all put in long hours and were rewarded with some great waves in the 10-12 foot plus range.

Visiting mainland professional surfers Dylan Longbottom, Laurie Towner, Wade Goodall, Kerby Brown, Anthony Walsh, Josh Kerr, Andrew Mooney and Dean Harrington all made the trip down to team up with the Tassie Lads.

The session was basically a paddle in day with a few tow in monsters rearing up every 20 minutes to half hour. Only after Benny Richo’s boat crew of Hazza and Kerr left mid arvo did the real Shipstern sets start to rumble on through.

From about 5 pm onwards sets in the 12-15 foot range pushed through with the incoming tide. Marti Paradisis and Mikey Brennan probably both got the biggest waves of the day, both having to negotiate the ledge to air drop while in the pit. Goofy footers Brown and Walsh both got some sick rides and also a couple of heavy beat downs. Brown happily went over the falls on a solid beast!

Towner and Longbottom both scored some large pits as well and Wade Goodall put in a solid performance on some smaller sets. – Andy Chiz.
