Mandela Trophy

Mandela Trophy

The contest organisers of the Billabong Pro are smiling as the waiting period for this year's event closes with tiny swell and a northerly (Devil wind) wind blowing across the line up.

There were a few crew who figured the final shouldn't have been run in onshore washing machine conditions on Thursday but for the past three days the wind has been northerly and the swell has been small and inconsistent. They made the right decision.

If they could have waited another day, the 18th in fact, the contest trophy's could have taken on a greater significance. Both Kelly and Mick's trophies were carved soapstone busts of one of the world's greatest humanitarians and South Africa's greatest statesman, Nelson Mandela. The 18th was significant because it was the great man's 90th birthday. Mandela was born in the Eastern Cape, same region as J-Bay and the Billabong Pro organisers had made the trophy especially to celebrate Mandela's 90th birthday.

Kelly spent his day playing golf to bring him down from the win while Mick went shark diving to keep his adrenaline running for the next clash. The shark dive saw around 30 great whites over a 2 hour period, one close to 5 meters in length and a Mini Mirror girth. Scary stuff when this monster was bigger than the shark diving cage!!

There are still a handful of pro surfer stragglers in J-Bay hanging around for the next swell which is due to fill in Monday afternoon. The maps are still looking good for a 4 meter swell which translates to around solid 6' waves at Supers. We'll wait and see.
