Bali

The swell systems are alive in the Indian Ocean at the moment. The swell just keeps on coming. Early in the week we scored a solid 3-5 feet swell on most of the Bukit reefs and Uluwatu was in the 6 ft range. Blue skies and strong off shores rounded out the perfect conditions. We shot perfect 3-4 feet barrels at Bingin with a few of the local boys and the Smith brothers from Kauai. The Kuta/Airport reefs were also pumping in the prefect 3-4 ft range.

Everyone’s been getting their fix of waves, so crowds haven’t been an issue. On Wednesday the swell dropped a little, but there were still waves on the reefs. On Thursday there were some waves on the beaches at Kuta/Legian for a beach bash. By Friday the swell started building during the day and by sunset there was the odd 4-6 foot set breaking at Padang which had the Rip Curl crew frothing that the contest could be called on. But sunrise on saturday morning the swell was smaller and the contestants and Rip Curl crew sat around on the cliff top drinking coffee watching the 3-foot low tide waves at Padang. The wind was up early, so Canggu was bumpy, ugly and too big. On Sunday the swell was hanging in around 3 feet at most reefs on the Bukit.

Session of the week- Any Victorian lucky enough to be escaping the bloody cold winter back in Australia and hitting Bali for a holiday.

North Sumatra.

Well it had to happen and right on cue as predicted in Ben McCartney’s Indo Swell Forecast we have had one of the better weeks of the season, While it did not match March for size it certainly had quality. There were actually quite a few surfers in the region and the focus on the best day (Friday August 13) was the hollow waves. As you would have seen in the video there were plenty of deep tubes ridden on Friday, but the days before and after were the real joy, clean 4 -5 feet and lots of reef/point set-ups firing. The swell peaked on Friday night along with a pretty wild hit of weather. Our next round of waves are due early this week, so hopefully it just keeps coming till January!
