Sam Humphry wins the opening Wahu Surfer Grom Comp at Trigg Point WA

(Sunday, 7th Nov 2010). The second and final day of the Wahu Surfer Grom Comps wound up at Trigg Point, Western Australia. The specialty junior surfing events put a heavy emphasis on competitors and families having fun. There was no shortage of that being had by those who attended the opening event of the Australia wide series.  While most kids were happy to enjoy the usual shenanigans of a day on the beach, Wahu gave groms the chance to do more than just throw on a coloured rash vest and have a splash. The conditions improved from yesterday with small and reeling waves at Trigg Point offering some great scoring potential for surfers competing across six divisions. Waves in the waist to chest high mark (1-2 feet) allowed for a memorable end to what is fast becoming one of the ‘must attend’ events on the Surfing WA events calendar.

The Wahu Surfer Grom Comps was highlighted by the U15 boys division, and the finalists really showed the love of competition surfing was very much alive at the event as well. Conditions changed during the afternoon thanks to freshening southerly winds, but competitors used this to their advantage, busting and weaving through some fun waves in the exciting final heat of the day. Sam Humphry (Wembly Downs) ent into the water as the number one seed after his second place finish in last summers Wahu Surfer Grom Comps. The ability to power through forehand turns was impressive posting a 7.33 opening ride. We he locked in a back up 6.73 the WA State Junior Surfing Team Member had claimed the win.

“Im really stoked, I finished second last year and to go one better is always good. I’ve just been training and surfing heaps and this event was really fun and laid back which was cool.” Said an elated Humphry’s after the final.

Shaun Manners (Margaret River) posed the biggest threat to Humphry when he scored the best wave in the final with a 7.50. However, Manners back up 5.50 was not quite enough to catch the winner finishing in second place. Jack Teague (Mosman Park) surfed excellently to finish in third place ahead of an unlucky Harry McPherson (Mandurah) who just couldn’t find the waves he needed to place fourth.

In the U13 boys surfing division Shaun Manners surfed another great heat, and bettered his result in the U15’s with a strong win. Manners used his superior wave selection to defeat Mandurah up and comer Ace Van Peer, Lachie Taylor (Karrinyup), and Ry Myers (Dunsborough) who finished second, third and fourth respectively. The dynamic surfing from Manners streamed his opposition and asserted his dominance with smooth rail to rail surfing, combined with chop hops and aerial manoeuvres. Manners 6.47 and 5.83 wave scores were enough to see him take out the win after initially withdrawing from the event after a recent fish bite between surfing in the South-West.

“It was a Taylor that bit me.. My mum is a nurse so she wrapped it up pretty good so I could surf in the comp. I want to thank my dad and my mum for bringing me up and also my sister Brigitte for her win.” Said Manners with a grin ear to ear.

Stepping up to the U11 boys division, Kael Walsh (Mt Claremont) showed his solid competition act and mixed it with some of the best WA junior surfers in years to come. The young finalists battled the afternoon waves with great gusto and enjoying event moment. Walsh was impressive as he edged out a great performance from South West surfer Kashmir Jones (Gractown) who finished second. Secret Harbours Brad Harrington finished in a close third ahead of Margaret River’s Kila Hatchett.

While in the U15 girls heats Eliza Greene (Yallingup) was equally impressive on her way to a well earned victory ahead of Dunsborough’s Marie Bradley. Ella Massie (Margaret River) also performed well finishing in a very close third ahead of Aleigh-Shae Norton (Secret Harbour) and Kelsey Lang (Swanbourne) finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

In other results Ella Massie took out the U13 girls surf division, with April McPherson (Mandurah) winning the U11 girls.

The U9 parent assist division sees mums’ and dads’  going along for the ride, helping the events smallest groms into the waves. This awesome division again had an emphasis on fun, but there could only be one winner on the day with Brigitte Manners (Margaret River) matching her older brothers efforts with a win,  just edging out Josh Stanton (Kalbarri), Josh Carlton (Scarborough, Josh Dunbar Golder (Hillarys) who finished second to fourth respectively.

The next event of the Wahu Surfer Grom Comps now heads to Ocean Groove in Victoria. For full results and pictures check out www.surfingaustralia.com – just select the Wahu banner ad on the front of the home - too easy!
