Harrison families dominate the final day of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps!

(Ocean Grove, Vic – Sunday 14th October 2010): Two unrelated Harrison families dominated the final day of the Wahu Groms Comps at Ocean Grove Main Beach today.

The Mornington Penninsula’s Harrison family, Piper, nine years old, and her brother Marlon, seven years, performed strongly in the shifting 2 to 3 foot (0.5 – 1 metre) conditions. Piper cleaned up the girls draw, taking first place in both the under 13 and under 11 divisions.

“I can’t believe I won twice today” exclaimed an overjoyed Piper, “it is great to win so much cool Wahu gear!”

“It was hard work to find the high scoring waves, I am really tired but it was worth it”.

Unfortunately Marlon was eliminated in the Under 9 division qualifying rounds that were eventually taken out by the perennially smiling Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc, Vic). Huxtable was a clear standout performer throughout the entire event, scoring the event’s only perfect 10 score on day one of competition.

Barwon Heads’ Harrison family followed in their namesake’s run of success. Ten year old Billy showed experience beyond his years to take first place in the under 11 division, as well as second place in both the under 13 and 15 age groups.

Billy’s two scoring rides in the under 11’s final were an 8.50 and a 9.67 (out of a possible 10), both of which drew rounds of applause from the spectators lining the boardwalk.

“I love to compete against the older kids” said Billy after the presentation, “they really push me to improve my surfing”.

Billy’s younger siblings also showed they are future stars in the making, with sister Ellie (age 6) surfing strongly and brother Joe (age 8) placing second in the under 9 mixed gender division.

The under 15 boys division was taken out by fourteen year old Phillip Island surfer Nic Huigsloot. Huigsloot first two scoring rides in the final, a 6.17 and 7.00 (out of a possible 10) were to two single highest scores in the fifteen minute showdown.

“This is the most fun I have had at a surfing comp”, said Huigsloot.

”I love playing the Wahu games on the beach with all my friends, my plan in the final was just to have fun”

“I didn’t think I was going to win, but then I found those two good waves at the start, I don’t think the win has sunk in yet!”

The under 15 girls division was taken out by Ocean Grove’s Jemimah Hutchins. Hutchins locked in two wave combined total of 13.67 (out of a possible 20) to finish ahead of Kerry O’James, Lucy Walsh and Maylee Fox.

Hutchins executed a series of radical off the top re-entry maneuvers to lock in an excellent 8 point ride (out of a possible 10) early on in the final, leaving the other girls to fight it out for the minor positions.

The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps are a national series, with a strong focus on fun and participation. All competitors walk away with an array of Wahu products as well as memories to cherish.
