Jan Juc, VIC (Thursday 29th September 2011): An increase in swell on day 2 of the first stop of the Rip Curl GromSearch series at Jan Juc provided competitors with great waves to showcase their skills.

The second round of the 16 and Under boys division was dominated Kip Caddy (Lake Tabourie, NSW) who posted a heat total of 11.17 (out of a possible 20). Caddy performed a series of innovative moves including a perfectly executed tail slide re-entry.

Caddy finished second in his round one heat on day one, meaning he progresses through to the semi-finals.

The 2011 Rip Curl GromSearch involves an innovative competition format, which sees all competitors compete in round one and two in a round robin type format.

Kelly Norris (Coolum, QLD) was able to sneak into the semi-finals with a powerful display of surfing in the final heat of the division. Norris showed his strength by posting a total heat score of 13.50 to take out Jake Thompson (Avoca, NSW) and Jackson Baker (Newcastle, NSW).

Moving through to the semi-finals alongside Caddy and Norris will be Kai Hing (Sunshine Coast, QLD), Jordan Lawler (North Narrabeen, NSW), Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, VIC), Lois Gillick (Culburra Beach, NSW), Will Morrison (Currumbin, QLD) and Chris Robinson (Cronulla, NSW).

In the 16 and Under Girls, it was Kelly Laity (Sandy Point) who took the top seed going into the final. Laity was able to find two scoring rides in a slow heat to post a total heat score of 9.74.

Sophia Bernard (Manly, NSW) and Coco Beeby (Scotts Head, NSW) were the highest scoring surfers for the round, amassing total heat scores of 12.40 and 12.44 respectively. They will both progress to the final along with Laity and Naomi McCarthy (Palm Beach, QLD).

In the 14 and Under division, Jan Juc’s Zoe Clarke won her round two heat ahead of in-form South Australian surfer Ellie Francis.

Clarke and Francis both progress to the final alongside Rikki Bell-Warren (Bells Beach, VIC), Grace Day (Jan Juc, VIC) and Koko Di Sciascio (Jan Juc, VIC).

All finals will be surfed tomorrow morning with a call for the first heat to be made at 8:00am.

The Rip Curl GromSearch is presented by Telstra, with major partner Air Asia and associate partners Waves Magazine and DHD surfboards.
