Young Guns Feel The Need For Speed At Camp Coastalwatch

COOLANGATTA/QLD (Friday, September 30): Speed was the key for the surfers who completed the latest Camp Coastalwatch at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre.

Sixteen of the country’s most promising surfers were chosen to attend the three-day camp and will leave better equipped to take their surfing to a new level.

Camp Coastalwatch is open to any Under 16 surfer in Australia who has not reached the quarter- final at a national competition, but shows a motivation to want to improve their surfing. The third and final Camp Coastalwatch of the year received almost 300 applications.

“It was an excellent group. They had a great attitude and were eager to learn as much as possible,” said High Performance Centre Manager James Eggington.

“They soaked up everything like sponges and all the information they were given could be seen in action in the surfing sessions which followed.

“One of the big changes at this level is speed generation. You create speed by lifting your arms after compressing your body and you could see that improvement in their surfing after they were given this guidance. I’m sure we’ll see some of the participants from this camp enjoying more competition success.”

The surfers chosen to attend were: Queensland: Jak Duggan (Bli Bli); Georgia Kervin (Palm Beach); Jackson Lynch (Coolum Beach); Zach Foster (Wurtulla). South Australia: Lachlan Schultz (West Beach). Tasmania: Eli Hohnke (Boat Harbour). New South Wales: Oliver Troughton (One Mile Beach); Paris Whittaker (Caringbah);  James Beck (Wamberal); Elliot Lynch (Terranora). Victoria: Mac Lawless-Pyne (Elsternwick); Jai Ryan (Cowes); Tom Wright (Jan Juc); Lachie Baker (Torquay); Josh Cammarere Torquay).

Jackson Lynch from Coolum Beach won a BASE surfboard after been named the camp’s Most Improved Surfer.

Participants received a world class coaching program from Australia’s best surf coaches including a Silicon Coach DVD plus accommodation and food.

They were given guidance in surfers technique, wave usage, education on “how to surf to judging criteria”, competition preparation and strategies, surf specific fitness training, wave selection, time management, psychological approach and competition analysis.

Camp Coastalwatch is proudly supported by Surfing Australia, Coastalwatch, the Australian Sports Commission, the Illicit Drugs In Sport program, BASE surfboards, Suncorp, TravelSim and Casuarina Beach.
