TravelSIM Team Australia Ready For ISA Masters Assault

COOLANGATTA/QLD (Saturday, 15th October): The powerful TravelSIM Team Australia will arrive in El Salvador this weekend still confident of defending their title at the ISA World Masters Championships despite the late withdrawal of former World Champion Wayne Bartholomew.

To be held at Punta Roca from 16th-23rd October, the titles include more than 20 countries and more than 150 surfers competing in the Masters, Grand Masters, Kahuna and Grand Kahuna divisions.

Bartholomew sustained a leg injury while training at Snapper Rocks and was devastated to miss the championships.

His 11th-hour replacement in the Grand Kahuna division is Byron Bay ripper Nick “Zippy” Pearson.

Pearson had only recently returned from a trip to the Mentawais and had barely unpacked his luggage. He is a previous Queensland senior men’s champion and finished second in the Australian senior men’s title in 1989.

“I can’t believe it really as I just got back from the Mentawais so the feet haven’t really touched the ground,” Pearson said.

“I’ve represented Australia as a judge before but this will be the first time as a surfer so to represent Australia in an opportunity like this will be amazing.”

TravelSIM Team Australia boasts a strong line-up including seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley, who was proud to be part of an Australian team in her competitive return.

“I'm really excited to be jumping back into the competitive arena for the first time since I retired,” Beachley said. “There are some serious contenders competing this year so it's going to be super competitive and loads of fun.

“This will be the first time I have officially been part of a team representing Australia and I'm enormously proud. I can't wait to put on the team uniform and raise the Australian flag to celebrate the occasion.

“Of course we are in it to win it but we won’t let that seriousness get in the way of ensuring we enjoy the whole experience.”

Australia is not the only team calling on the services of a legend of the sport with three-time World Champion Tom Curren joining the USA team.
