19th October, 2011 Bali/Indo #06
Indonesian report by Jason Childs

The month of October usually throws up one last big swell of the dry season and this year we saw the biggest swell of the season hit. Some old-timers are calling it the biggest couple of sets ever to hit Bali at 6pm on Monday the 17th of October.

Only a handful of surfers took on the 15 feet plus waves at Outside Corner at Uluwatu. Jim Banks and a few others had to scratch for the horizon as the biggest sets came in just on sunset. The set broke in front of them, with Jim losing his board and getting a two wave hold down. The crowd on the cliff feared for his life, but Jim popped up down the reef.

Padang Padang was epic on the medium sized sets and as the afternoon went on the swell grew faster than I have ever seen. Made (my assistant/jet ski driver) and I in between shooting rescued and dragged back to the beach many a boardless surfer  and other photogs who couldn’t get back in.

The four-day swell saw Padang Padang break everyday and the crowd only froth out on the last day. It felt like the good old days when we would get back-to-back solid swells. Impossibles and Balangan were also pumping with sets up to 12 feet on the peak of the swell and only a handful of surfers wanting to have a go on that Monday night.

It was a memorable swell for those who wanted a piece of the action and those who sat on the cliffs and watched.
