In the wake of the Rip Curl Pro’s departure from Bells Beach earlier this month, Victorian surfers – particularly along the Surf Coast - haven’t exactly enjoyed the kind of classic autumn conditions the region is known for. That’s all about to change as Victoria’s swell window switches, following a succussion of low pressure systems moving below the continent.

This activity comes to a head this weekend a large, slow moving low pressure complex stalls below the mainland; supplying the state with several pulses of large, mid to long period WSW and SW groundswell; large enough to keep the Surf Coast firing throughout the weekend and for most of next week.

The arrival of a first, large round of WSW swell is set to light up the region with clean 4 to 6ft plus conditions on Sunday – and it’s now clear this just marks the first in a succession of challenging days of surf across the region. As depicted below, the emerging parent low stalls directly south of the state on Sunday and Monday; setting up a vast belt of SW gales throughout Victoria’s swell window from Sunday through to early Tuesday.

A sustained run of large, long-interval SSW groundswell follows over the course of next week; probably showing peak size on Tuesday and holding plenty of push throughout Wednesday. This could see some of the bigger rideable days you’re likely to see along the Surf Coast this autumn – and there are leading indications surface quality won’t be too shabby through the peak of this event. For more details on swell-specifics and arrival times check the detailed Victorian forecast here.

Sunday's first peak in WSW groundswell carries enough west in direction to wash-off a bit of size and consistency along the Surf Coast, but it will be pumping none-the-less. Source: Wave Tracker.
