If the idea of flying through an ash cloud and watching as all your aircrafts engines flame out doesn’t put you off, then the coming fortnight is shaping up as a pretty good window for surfing across the Indonesian Archipelago. As of Tuesday morning flights have resumed in and out of Bali, but there’s still considerable uncertainty on how the ash-cloud will affect Denpasar airport going forward. The volcanic eruption of Mount Raung began late June and this week’s heightened activity is, on the scale of volcanic eruptions, only minor. Known as ‘strombolian’, the eruptions are intermittent, small-scale bursts of material ejecting from a single vent or crater. Only minor in nature they may be, but Mount Raung is located just 140 kilometres east-southeast of Denpasar and low level ash-plumes carried eastward by mid-levels winds are the source of many-a-delayed flight this week. Although the skies have cleared over Bali over the last 24 hours Mount Raung remains active and it remains unclear as to whether or not there will be further disruptions to travel – not just over the next few days – but over the coming weeks.
