Video: The Greatest Big Wave Surfer Of The Next Generation

6 Jan 2016 1 Share

In 2015, Surfing World Magazine inaugurated REELERS short surf film competition. The response was overwhelming and the calibre of entries and talent that rolled in blew the judges away. Imagine Kai Neville, Jack McCoy and Taylor Steele stoked on a surf film you've made!?

Director of Thundercloud, Talon Clemow entered a short film about south coast, big wave surfer Russell Bierke and his mentor Mark Mathews. The entry, titled Master and Apprentice, won Clemow the Story category of the 2015 Reelers event after judge, Taylor Steele was blown away with the concept and cinematography of the 3-minute film.

He's no stranger to creating incredible productions and encapsulating raw emotion through the power of his film and editing work, Clemow was still humbled by his win.

"I'm over the moon, it's unbelievable. You go into competitions to win them, not to come second and to get the result is great!"

Talon put together a moving insight into the world of 18-year-old Ulladulla big wave charger Russell Bierke. The creator of the great film Thundercloud loved uncovering the life of Australia's craziest super grom.

"To me, Russ is the kind of kid that is going to be as big or better than Mark Matthews, he's going to lead the way for the next generation of big waves surfers and people just haven't seen that yet. I'm just so excited for him and to work with him on this level, it's almost like an unearthing thing and I'm just stoked that he's stoked to work with me. He's incredible and talented and he's got pedigree too and you can't buy that stuff. I just can't wait to see how if goes for him in the next five years. He's pushing Mark already by nipping at his heels. There's just no other kids taking on The Right, Shipsterns."

No doubt his prize money will be going towards his next masterpiece that will begin production in the coming months.

"In November (2015) I'm moving to Tasmania to work with the core guys down there on a documentary project that will be my next piece of work and I want it to be bigger and better than Thundercloud. These guys warrant to be on that stage, they have an incredible story and attitude. Everyone knows about Shipsterns and Pedra Branca but no one knows the story behind these places and those guys that go out there and charge twenty foot plus waves."
