FOUR SEASONS MALDIVES CHAMPIONS TROPHY | Event Partner

THE SULTANAS OF THE SINGLE-FIN

“Hey Jamie, you been riding that fin front or back?”

“Shane, you know I can’t tell you that. You’re in my heat, dude.”

Jamie O’Brien and Shane Dorian were surfing Sultans this morning, both surfing single-fins, tuning up for their heat later this morning. The Maldives Champions Trophy contest isn’t so much a contest. Not the one-heat-at-a-time kind of deal. It’s more some freestyle hit and giggle for an assortment of surfing legends who all broke free of the real tour some time back, all for various reasons – Shane and Jamie, Machado, Bethany, Taj and Trav Logie. Today in the Maldives none of them seemed to be regretting their decision.

If there’s one thing this event will do… it will certainly ruin every future surf trip for the attendees. It can only go downhill from here, as this is by far the world’s most decadent surf event. The event runs in partnership with the nearby Four Seasons Kuda Huraa resort, who aren’t doing things by halves when it comes to looking after the crew. Jamie almost never made it past the breakfast buffet this morning, a deadly assortment of gourmet pastries, tropical fruits and 30 kinds of bacon that poses the most dangerous aspect of this deluxe event.

For some, the contrast has been stark.

Just two months ago, Taj Burrow was confined to a cramped, airless coffin of a bed on a Mentawais charter boat, sick as a dog, sweating, to sick to surf and only leaving his cabin to spew into a rank black hole below decks. Today his fortunes improved somewhat. He walked past for his first heat, woofed a smoked salmon and caviar canapé, and said, “Righteo, back into it!”

The really interesting aspect of the event is that there are single-fin, twin and thruster rounds, each of them counting equally toward a winner later this week. It was little surprise that last year Dave Rasta won the event with daylight second, and out in the lineup this morning Shane and Jamie were talking about Rasta ‘s uncanny ability to weight and unweight and master the most unlikely of craft.

Today was single fin day, and Taj Burrow walked past with a black-railed 6’3” borrowed from Jake Paterson back home in Yallingup. The one catch with the deal however is that the board has a huge decal of a stripper in black lingerie, the kinda decal that was big circa 2001 and remains big in the street racing circuit. Taj took one look at the thing and wanted to rip the sticker off; Snake wouldn’t have a bar of it. The bikini chick stayed.

The stripper board went like a rocket though.

Taj had never been to the Maldives before this trip, and his only intel came from his old boy, Vance, who’d told him Sultans was as fun as a wave can get. Taj added an asterisk to this assessment, believing Sultans to be fun only if you were 60. Well, turns out it’s also pretty damn rippable for those with their own teeth.

As we speak Taj is paddling out in the single fin final with Rob Machado, but in the relaxed spirit of this event you’re going to get relaxed coverage of the final. I’m going surfing. We’ll let you know who won tomorrow.
