Hurley Camp January 2012

When my plane touched down in Sydney Airport on January 10th, I walked into the terminal full of anticipation and eager vibes for the days ahead. It was my first Hurley True Performance Coaching Camp and I wasn’t sure what to be most psyched about - the coaching, training and Yoga with Holly, spending time with the rest of the Hurley team, or frothing out with former world champion Barton Lynch, not to mention the predicted swell and favourable winds on the way.  I was pumped. Meeting up with the rest of the Hurley groms was the first order of business. It was sic. Matty King (Kingy) a fellow 16 year old from Ulladulla, and two 12 year old shredders Darcy Crump from Avalon, and Sandon Whitaker from Avoca and myself were the crew.

Day 1 saw some small but fun waves out the front at Whale Beach. Barton got straight into heats. Having Kingy there was awesome and I frothed on his smooth text book style. We were constantly pushing each other to go bigger and better as were Darcy and Sandon. Some of the things those groms were throwing down was all time. We finished the day with a session out South Avalon and then a dinner as a group with Holly’s amazing cooking.

Day 2 maximised some very competitive waves back at Whale Beach. I say competitive because the waves were typical to the conditions we all regularly surf in a comp. This was ideal for heat practice and hassling drills where Kingy and I went head to head.

Day 3 was epic. The kind of day every surfer lives for. In Barton’s words it was “special”. We pulled up to the beach in silence as Kingy and I stared at some perfect 3 foot,  “fun as it gets” right handers reeling off towards the northern cliff at Whaley. We both threw on our wetties and got out there. The next 4 hours were just perfect - super fun waves with endless ramps allowing virtually anything. On the break was just Matt and I and some Whaley locals, with Sandon and Darcy coming out later.  Photographers were on the beach alongside the frothing BL. It was biblical! I dare say I flew home on Saturday January 14th pretty stoked.

Thanks Hurley for the opportunity and to Barton and Holly, you’re both legends!
