Kirra Point Rally for Rocks

13 Apr 2012 0 Share

This weekend on Saturday 14th April at 12 noon, Queen Elizabeth Park, Coolangatta side of the Kirra Point following the Michael Peterson Memorial paddle out, surfers and beach users with a united goal to replace the rocks on the Kirra Point groyne will form an audience to hear all Gold Coast Mayoral candidates speak on the issue.

Also in attendance will be the Honourable Member for Currumbin and new Queensland Government Minister of Tourism Jann Stuckey along with Division 14 Southern Shire Councillor Chris Robbins.

Local surfers and community members including two time world champion Mick Fanning have formed a consensus that the iconic landmark be reinstated to facilitate the return of Kirra's world famous barrels and to also create a safe unique promenade with a desirable northerly aspect.

An overwhelming majority backed up by a recent Government community consultation that resulted in an 80% vote to rebuild the ' Rock" groyne to its original specification.

The G.C.C.C. removed 30m of the groyne in 96' without community consultation resulting in the immediate deterioration of the wave amenity and the gradual sinking and crumbling of the next 30m.  For the last sixteen summers this world class amenity has been " Missing in Action ".

According to the President of KPI (Kirra Point Inc.), Wayne Deane said, “The ‘Rock’ groyne is an integral part of the puzzle to bring back this iconic amenity with its unparalleled proximity to the foreshore and wave zone environment!”
