North Haven, Port Macquarie: (Friday 24th August 2012): NSW surfers Russell Molony (Central Coast, NSW) and Philippa Anderson (Merewether, NSW) have been crowned the respective Open Men’s and Women’s champions on the final day of the Australian Surf Festival supported by Essential Energy at Port Macquarie.

Molony, who had his competitors in a combination situation in the final, netted a 8.65 and a 9.5 to beat Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), Joe Sear (Cronulla, NSW) and Darren O’Rafferty (Bonny Hills, NSW).

“All the boys surfed amazing and I just got lucky on the day,” said Molony. “I’m stoked the waves came to me. I got a nice little inside wave and got a good score. The waves here were so good so I’m glad they moved it from Middle Rock.”

Qualifying for the NSW team after winning the Australian Indigenous Titles held in Bells Beach in May this year, Molony was super happy with his second Australian Title in 2012.

“I am so happy,” he said. “I just want to give a big shout out to all the Indigenous guys around Australia. Thanks to everyone at Surfing Victoria. That’s how I was able to surf in this event, by winning the Koori titles at Bells.”

New South Wales continued the domination in the Open Women’s final with Philippa Anderson (Merewether, NSW) attacking the waves with precision and power. Her perfect 10.0 and 9.50 rides gave her the highest combined heat total of the day.

“I’m really happy,” said Anderson. “In the juniors I got a lot of seconds, so finally in the Opens I can take it and keep it in NSW. The field was really hard. There was quite a few girls surfing really good so I’m really happy.”

The afternoon saw the Single Fin and Alaia take to the water for the second year running and defending Alaia champion Barney Quinlan took it out again for 2012. All divisions wrapped up after a long day at North Haven and Middle Rock.

The Australian Surf Festival event website is LIVE at www.australiansurffestival.com and features live scores, heat by heat results, photo gallery and event news.

This year’s event will also feature a busy schedule off the water with live music and surf education courses. Town Green Inn will become the headquarters for all the land-based action providing competitors and spectators an opportunity to relax when competition is over for the day. A series of coaching courses will be available for surfing, SUP and judging.

The Australian Surf Festival is proudly supported by Essential Energy, NSW Government, Destination NSW, Port Macquarie Tourism, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Harley-Davidson Australia, Town Green Inn, Nikon, Suncorp, VB, Australian Sports Commission, Coastalwatch, NBN, Port Macquarie News, 2MC, Star FM, Surfing World Magazine and Pacific Longboarder Magazine.
