VQS Surf Series Kiama

5 Nov 2012 0

The Volcom VQS surf series second stop took place this weekend at Kiama surf beach. We rolled up early Saturday morning and were greeted with clean 4-5 foot waves. Kiama surf beach is well known as a solid wedge and this can make for some tricky conditions at times. So we were going to see some serious surfing go down. The heats filled up quick, so we got the first heat in the water nice and early… Blow the hooter lads, lets get this VQS under way!

The groms hit the water first with no fear of the solid swell. They got their froth on, paddled straight out the back and were going for anything in the final. With the knowledge they only have 10 minutes and best 1 wave, Sam Coulter started of strong with a 7 point ride, riding a big left all the way to the beach. Morgan Cibilic took off on a bomb in the last 5 minutes to score himself an 8 point ride to take the win. Sam had to settle for second place, Jay Longbottom, son of big wave legend dylan Longbottom was always going to be one to watch out for, he surfed well and took third spot. Lennox Head grom Jack Murrey was in form all day but just couldn’t find one in the final and took 4th position. A fantastic effort from all the groms.

The squids division is one you wont want to miss. Watching these groms take on the waves with mum and dad is the coolest thing to witness. Kobi Clements fresh off a win in BL’s Blast Off stole the show in the final with dad Steve launching him into some bombs from out the back. Kobi took the top honors. Summa Longbottom a local squid was on fire all day charging everything that came her way and having big wave surfer Dylan Longbottom as your dad helps with the fear factor, Summa took second place. Kye Kirk got a few long runners and took third place and rounding off the final was Beau Bukpitt in fourth spot.

The girls were ripping the whole contest with some exciting surfing in the final. Sophia Bernard was the standout in the semi and in the final, throwing down some big rail turns which was enough to take top spot in the final. Emma Barclay surfed strong and took second place. Rounding off the final was Cicely Brown in third and Kiahni Scott surfing in the squids and girls division took fourth spot. Well done girls.

In the juniors final the battle was fierce, ?Frazer Dovell took the honors thanks to some strong surfing on his backhand. Lucas Elder was throwing down big scores all day, he just couldn’t find the one in the final and had to settle with second spot. Rounding out the rest of the podium was Jackson Backer in third and young shredder Jack Murray took fourth place.

The Pro Am final is always exciting, especially if you have the likes of local Jordi Watson & Jordan Lawler going head to head. Watson started off strong laying down a big score, this left the boys playing catch up for the rest of the heat. Jack Scollard took a bomb and pushed it all the way to the beach and got barreled along the way to grab a high score. Lawler made his run late getting a solid left in the last 5 minutes throwing buckets everywhere, but this still wasn’t enough to take the lead from Watson who was in fine form on the day and secured himself the win. Lawler took second, Scollard was third and rounding out the final was Matt King in fourth.

Big thanks to everyone involved for making this event happen. Kiama Council for giving us the beach for the day, all the local boardrider’s & Zink Surf for all their support. David Hyslop for all his help on the day, local shredder Rhys Bombaci, Tom Rudd and Bemmy  for all their hard work behind the mic, the judges and all the sponsors. These events wouldn’t be possible without the amazing help.
